Barnsley's Tech Town Bets £800,000 on Closing the AI Skills Gap

Barnsley's Tech Town Bets £800,000 on Closing the AI Skills Gap

Barnsley is opening an £800,000 fund to pay training providers, colleges, and charities to teach AI skills to its manufacturing workers, small businesses, and residents — with the goal of turning what works there into a national blueprint for the UK's 10-million-worker AI upskilling target by 2030.

Barnsley, the UK's first government-designated "Tech Town," has opened applications for an £800,000 AI Upskilling Challenge Fund — a bid to prove that AI-driven growth doesn't have to bypass towns outside the usual tech hubs.

The fund, launched by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, is calling on training providers, colleges, charities, and technology firms from across the UK to pitch bold, tailored programmes rather than generic e-learning modules. The brief is broad by design: help manufacturers put AI to work on the factory floor, give small businesses room to grow, build digital confidence among older residents, and prepare young people entering the job market for AI-shaped careers.

A local pilot with national ambitions

What makes the initiative notable for cities and towns watching the AI transition isn't just the funding — it's the intent behind it. Officials have framed Barnsley as a test bed: successful projects are meant to inform how similar upskilling programmes could roll out nationally, feeding into a wider government target of equipping 10 million UK workers with AI skills by 2030.

“Whether it’s helping manufacturers boost productivity, supporting small businesses to grow, or giving workers the confidence to embrace new technology, we want ideas that can make a real difference. The best solutions won’t just help people in Barnsley - they could become a blueprint for how Britain equips a generation with the skills of the future.” - Minister for AI, Kanishka Narayan

“This investment as part of Barnsley’s Tech Town status is another important step in delivering our vision for Barnsley’s future.  It supports Barnsley Council’s ambition to become the UK’s leading digital town, helps future-proof our world-class logistics and manufacturing sectors, and ensures that communities across the borough can benefit from the opportunities that growth brings.

By investing in innovation, skills and infrastructure, we are creating the conditions for businesses and residents to thrive.” - Cllr Andy Cudworth, Barnsley Council’s Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Assets

Why manufacturing and small business come first

The fund's priority groups are telling: workers in manufacturing and logistics, older residents, and entry-level workers who fall outside existing free training provision. That's a deliberate departure from upskilling efforts aimed primarily at white-collar or tech-sector workers.

“This will help us be more streamlined and efficient, AI isn’t the technology of the future anymore, it’s here and this training will help make sure people and businesses are not left behind.” - Scott Snodgrass, Director at Hawk Lifting in Barnsley

The details

  • Fund size: £800,000, shared across successful applicants
  • Eligibility: Any UK-based organisation, provided the programme is delivered to Barnsley residents and workers
  • Application window: Opened 15 July 2026, closing 12 August 2026
  • Platform: Applications via the government's Find a Grant service
  • Outcome timeline: Successful applicants named September 2026

The Tech Town designation itself dates to February 2026, when Barnsley became the UK's first government-backed Tech Town. The AI skills fund is one of the more concrete tests yet of whether that label translates into measurable change for residents — and whether a mid-sized former industrial town can become a genuine proving ground for how Britain scales AI skills beyond its major cities.
