Be Prepared: How to Properly Use a Fire Extinguisher

29 Mar 2023, 6:44 am GMT+1

Fire extinguishers are essential tools for businesses. Not only can they fight a small fire, but they can also protect evacuation routes in case of larger incidents.

However, if you attempt to fight a fire or use the wrong type of extinguisher, it could cause more harm than good. To ensure proper use of your fire extinguisher, here are some simple instructions. By following these instructions and performing a fire extinguisher inspection, you can protect your family and business from the threat of fire.

Aim the Nozzle

If you're uncertain how to properly use a fire extinguisher, ask your local fire department for a demonstration. Many will be more than happy to help teach this essential skill.

Remember to aim the nozzle, hose or horn of a fire extinguisher at the base of the flames. This is where fuel accumulates and what you must use to put out the flames and prevent further spread.

First, squeeze the handle of your fire extinguisher to send a stream of suppressant through its hose and out the nozzle. After filling up with suppressant, sweep it back and forth repeatedly in order to completely extinguish any flames.

Once the fire appears to be extinguished, evacuate the area and watch closely for any sign of rekindling. If you spot any glowing embers, call 911 immediately.

Pull the Pin

In case of a fire emergency, always remember to pull the pin on your fire extinguisher. Doing so can prevent it from accidentally discharging, which could be hazardous or even fatal.

It's essential to remember that your fire extinguisher should only be used to put out the fuel, not on it. Doing so could cause further destruction or even set the area ablaze once more.

Once you've pulled the pin, aim at the base of the fire and squeeze slowly. Next, sweep from side to side until all fuel has been discharged and the fire is extinguished completely.

Pull the Pin is an engaging and addictive puzzle game that tests your mind. With realistic physics and challenging levels, Pull the Pin is definitely worth giving a try if you enjoy brain teasers!

Squeeze the Lever

No doubt you've noticed some fancy fire extinguishers adorning offices or mantels around town. But which one is best suited for your situation? Using a fire extinguisher can seem intimidating at first glance, but with proper orientation and appropriate attire, using one won't be nearly as intimidating. To ensure safe operation, always follow manufacturer's instructions and dress appropriately for the occasion.

Sweep the Nozzle

Utilizing a fire extinguisher may seem straightforward, but the difference between putting out the flames or having to evacuate your home depends on its proper use. To be prepared, practice with your extinguisher before ever needing it in an emergency.

Many fire extinguishers require you to remove a pin near the top of the handle in order to discharge them. Other units require you to release a lock latch or press a puncture lever in order to activate.

Once you've taken out the pin or other mechanism, aim the nozzle of your fire extinguisher low at the base of the fire (this means the flames won't do any good). Next, squeeze the handle to release suppressant gas and sweep from side to side until all flames appear to have gone out. Monitor closely for any re-ignition and use another extinguisher if necessary.

By following these instructions, you can protect your family and business from the threat of fire. Be sure to invest in a 30 lb D type extinguisher and remember to keep it up to date. With the right extinguisher and proper use, you can be ready for any fire emergency.
