Beeple’s ‘Diffuse Control’ Brings AI-Powered Art to MMoCA

The interactive installation transforms works from the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s collection through AI, audience participation and generative digital systems.
Madison, Wisconsin — September 2026 — Digital artist Beeple, also known as Mike Winkelmann, will open Diffuse Control at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) on 19 September 2026. The exhibition runs until 10 January 2027.
The large-scale installation draws from MMoCA’s permanent collection and continuously transforms those works across a network of monumental digital screens.
Visitors are not simply observers. Their interaction becomes part of the evolving artwork, and attendees at the opening will be able to generate a unique print linked to their experience.
AI, Art and Shared Authorship
Diffuse Control sits at the intersection of contemporary art, artificial intelligence and museum archives.
Instead of using AI only as a production tool, the installation treats it as part of the artwork’s ongoing behaviour.
That raises broader questions around authorship.
Is the final artwork created by the artist, the AI system, the museum’s collection, the audience — or by all of them together?
The exhibition also reflects a wider shift in digital culture. Generative art increasingly behaves less like a finished object and more like a system that changes over time.

A Return to Wisconsin
Beeple was born and raised in Wisconsin and has become one of the most recognised names in digital art.
His practice spans digital imagery, animation, sculpture and immersive technology-led installations. Diffuse Control marks his first major museum presentation in Wisconsin.
Opening Reception
The public opening takes place on Saturday, 19 September 2026, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at MMoCA, 227 State Street, Madison.
Food and drinks will be provided by Executive Chef Elena Terry of Tall Grass at MMoCA.
The exhibition will remain on view until 10 January 2027.

Beeple, the professional name of Mike Winkelmann, is an American digital artist known for work spanning computer-generated imagery, animation, sculpture, NFTs and large-scale immersive installations.
He became one of the most prominent figures in digital art after his NFT work Everydays: The First 5000 Days sold at Christie’s in 2021. His recent work increasingly explores the relationship between digital systems, technology, contemporary culture and audience participation.
