Best US Residential Address Options for Americans Living Abroad (2026)
24 Aug 2026

The U.S. citizens moving to another country typically take care of their visa, their shipping and their housing. However, most often, the issue with "the address they left behind" in the United States is the first item that creates trouble for them.
This can appear as being unable to complete a trade (mid-transaction) using your brokerage account; a bank requires verification of your contact information and then rejects your response; a driver's license renewal application that cannot be processed. Each of these appears to be an individual administrative problem. In reality, each represents the same problem: the current address on file.
Below is a description of the various ways American expats accomplish this including using paid services, utilizing family members, and retaining some form of ownership. For each option listed below there is a discussion regarding what it compares well against and when it fails.
The distinction that decides everything
In addition to running a customer identification program (CIP) as required by the USA PATRIOT Act, U.S. financial institutions are obligated to confirm a physical address associated with each account holder. A mailing address will NOT be acceptable. Only a valid residential address will.
The way mailbox and mail forwarding services operate varies from how many consumers believe they do. When establishing service at such an agency, you sign and submit USPS Form 1583. The purpose of signing the form is so that you have authorized the service provider to receive and hold deliveries for you. Signing the form legally enables them to accept mail on your behalf; it also registers the address used when completing the form in USPS systems in the Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) category.
Financial Institutions react to CMRA classifications differently. Most identify addresses through various commercial-address databases. There are three common actions taken after identifying a CMRA classification. First, most simply leave the account open. Second, some may request additional proof of identity or residency. Third, others may place restrictions on the account. Policies regarding CMRA classifications vary depending upon the institution and can change over time. Similarly, states use similar reasoning and policies when evaluating addresses submitted by applicants for driver’s licenses and other forms of ID. While individual states require different documentation, a commercial mailbox is generally not acceptable as proof of current residence.
This single classification is the determining factor among these options. Before continuing any further it should be stated clearly: if all you need to do is read your mail from outside of the United States then using a virtual mailbox is the best and least expensive option. For virtually every consumer described above, the remainder of this article will be entirely irrelevant.
How these were compared
Four questions, applied to each option:
• Address type in postal data. Residential, or CMRA?
• What institutions ask for. Can you produce supporting documents when a bank, a broker or a state agency asks for proof of address, or only an address on a form?
• Domicile. Does the arrangement help establish a genuine legal home in a new state, or is it purely a mail solution?
• Mail handling. Scanning, forwarding, storage, packages.
No option below wins on all four. The right answer depends on which of them is your actual problem.
1. Your Tax Base: best for Americans who need the address on financial and state records
Your Tax Base assigns a Florida street address in a residential community rather than at a commercial mail facility, and supplies supporting documents alongside it.
Holds up against: the requests institutions actually make. Because the address is residential rather than commercial in postal data, it is the address type most US banks and brokerages ask for on account records and KYC checks. Proof-of-address documents are prepared so there is something to hand over when a firm asks for proof rather than an entry on a form.
Fails when: all you need is mail scanning, in which case it costs more than necessary. It also only works where the underlying move is genuine, which is covered further down.
Best for: people whose bank accounts, brokerage accounts, driver license or state tax position depend on the address holding up under review.
What Your Tax Base does differently
The address is a real Florida street address in a residential community, assigned in your own name and typically active within five days. Mail authorization paperwork is completed with a live notary from the dashboard rather than requiring a notary appointment abroad. Mail is scanned within 24 hours and can be forwarded worldwide. Declaration of Domicile guidance is included, along with the documents needed for a Florida driver license, though one in-person DMV visit is still required. Business customers can add a Florida registered agent for an LLC or corporation.
The company is explicit that acceptance depends on each institution's policies, which is the correct framing. No provider can commit to how a third party will treat an address.
2. Traveling Mailbox: best for high-volume mail and app-first users
Traveling Mailbox is a virtual mailbox service offering rapid scan times and an effective application.
Holds up againsts: mail (excellent), scanning time (rapid), mail forwarding flexibility (available), check deposit and package handling (available).
Fails when: the same CMRA classification that prevents the address from being recorded on financial account documents or used by a Motor Vehicle Agency; since the address is classified under CMRA, you cannot utilize this service if you intend to establish residency.
Best for: utilizing Traveling Mailbox to manage your mail but not for establishing identity.
3. US Global Mail: best for long-term storage and package consolidation
US Global Mail has been operating for many years and provides excellent service regarding both storing packages over extended periods of time and combining multiple shipments from abroad.
Strengths: Package heavy use; extended period of time for storage needs; cheap compared to other alternatives.
Weaknesses: The same CMRA classification that applies to the Traveling Mailbox Service also applies to the US Global Mail service, and Texas does not offer the domicile benefits customers generally seek when asking this type of question.
Ideal Candidates: Individuals shipping large quantities internationally, who prefer having their packages stored, rather than constantly forwarded.
4. Anytime Mailbox: best for choosing a specific city or state
Anytime Mailbox operates one of the largest networks of physical locations within the category, providing you with the option to choose a mailing address in a specific city.
Strengths: Ability to mail packages; Ability to intentionally select a State.
Weaknesses: Customers may incorrectly believe that using a Florida or Texas location will improve their Tax Position. This is incorrect. Regardless of which State you choose, your address remains a CMRA, and domicile status is determined by much more than just the State your mail arrives in.
Ideal Candidates: Individuals looking to have mail delivered in a specific City and understand that this is a mail service.
5. iPostal1: best for lowest entry cost and broad coverage
iPostal1 offers thousands of locations at the least expensive initial entry point into the category.
Strengths: Budget. When you merely wish to see your mail, nothing competes with it on price.
Weaknesses: You will be unable to use this address for anything outside receiving mail. Same classification; same limitations.
Ideal Candidates: The mail-only case at the least expensive cost.
6. A family member's address: best when you have a stable, willing base
Using the records in the name of a family members’ or a close friends’ residence.
Strengths: Classification, completely. It is a legitimate residential address, and therefore will not come back as a CMRA. And there is no cost.
Weaknesses: Quietly depends upon another person remaining at that address, remaining cooperative, and sending items through in a timely manner. If any deadlines apply to this service, then this fails. Additionally, there is a secondary cost involved here. In addition to potentially relying upon another party to remain cooperative, if the household resides in a State you wished to relocate from, the association may negatively impact your domicile status instead of positively impacting it.
Ideal Candidates: Anyone who has a stable family unit residing in a State they do not object to being associated with.
7. Keeping a property you own: best when you want the property anyway
Maintaining ownership of a house or condominium and continuing to utilize it as your home address.
Strengths: Will hold up to any level of scrutiny. Records showing ownership interest in property, services billed directly to you personally, provide about as good evidence as possible for proving a U.S. residential connection exists.
Weaknesses: Cost factors that most people overlook when retaining a property located in a high-tax jurisdiction create one of the strongest ties auditors review when determining if you truly relocated from the previous location.
Ideal Candidates: People wishing to retain possession of the property regardless of cost considerations.

Why Florida comes up so often
There is no State Income Tax in Florida and there will be none; as per their Constitution, therefore it is mentioned in almost every conversation about taxes. The components typically used are an established documented residential address, a drivers license (in Florida, new residents must have obtained one within 30 days of establishing their residency), voter registration, vehicle registration, and a Declaration of Domicile filed with the Clerk of the Circuit Court according to Fla. Stat. § 222.17. There is only one aspect of documentation which makes more of a difference than any other. A persons residency and domicile are two different legal terms. While residency is mostly based on number of days, domicile refers to your permanent place of legal residence. When you establish a new domicile, the old one can only be considered abandoned once the new one has been assumed and the former has been clearly surrendered. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion does nothing to assist you since States do not follow this rule.
In Matter of Hoff, a couple was found to be New York domiciles despite having Florida driver licenses, Florida voter registration and Declarations of Domicile filed in Florida. According to the New York Tax Appeals Tribunal, who made this determination in October 2025, the couple maintained a New York residence and continued to conduct business in New York. The tribunal also concluded that both the number of days spent in each location during 2018 and 2019 favored New York.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a virtual mailbox as the address on my bank account?
Banks may allow this, however since a virtual mailbox is considered a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA), many will require additional documentation, or simply deny it based on their policies. So, if this account is important enough to you, just call them first and find out their policy on accepting these types of addresses.
What is a CMRA, and how do I know if an address is one?
A Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA) is a company that has been granted permission by the United States Postal Service to accept mail for others, i.e., mail box services. To verify that an agency is indeed a CMRA, look at the completed USPS form #1583. Any potential providers should tell you directly whether the street address they provide is a residential address or CMRA. And request that confirmation be made in writing.
Do I need a US address if I live abroad full time?
Most Americans living outside of the U.S. still maintain a U.S. address; since almost every institution in the U.S. requires an address for the purpose of communication. In fact, the question is rarely "do I need a U.S. address?", but rather "what type of address do I need?"
Will a US residential address keep my brokerage account open?
Having a U.S. residential address eliminates one typical cause of restrictions on an account being closed (i.e., having a commercial address listed as your primary address). But even then, it doesn't eliminate the possibility of your account being closed. Each individual brokerage firm determines their own policy for allowing/restricting customer access to their accounts. Whether you reside inside or outside of the U.S., there are other criteria that can impact the likelihood of a brokerage firm allowing you to retain your account (e.g. your state of residency).
Can I get a Florida driver license using a mailbox address?
Generally not. Like almost every state in the union, Florida requests proof of residential status and generally does not recognize commercial mailbox addresses as sufficient for obtaining a driver's license. Individual requirements can vary by state and over time. Before planning travel to Florida, confirm with the FLHSMV current regulations regarding obtaining a driver's license using a mailbox address.
Is it legal to use a mail forwarding address as my legal address?
It is completely legitimate to establish a mail-forwarding service and to utilize it. USPS Form 1583 was specifically developed to enable and facilitate this process. Where issues arise, it is not due to utilizing such a service per se, but rather attempting to list a state in which I am not actually residing. A change of domicile is a firmly established right when one intends to relocate permanently.
How long does it take to set up from overseas?
It varies by provider. A mailbox can usually be opened within a day or two once Form 1583 is notarized. A residential address arrangement takes longer, because of the supporting documents that come with it. Your Tax Base, for example, quotes roughly five days for the address itself and one to two weeks for the full document set.
Three questions before choosing a provider
Residential or CMRA, which is it? Put the question in those words and keep the reply in writing.
What supporting documents come with the address? An address on its own, with no paperwork behind it, leaves you nothing to hand over when an institution asks for proof.
Will my own bank, broker and state agency accept it? Policies differ by institution and by state, so ask yours rather than relying on a general claim.
Get the address right before leaving. It is the cheapest item on the relocation checklist and the most expensive one to fix afterwards.
