Cybersecurity for Students: Staying Safe on Campus Networks
27 Aug 2025

If you’re attending a university or college campus, then you might be required to create and submit work using a laptop, perhaps using a publicly available WiFi network.
But not so fast! There are risks inherent in this practice, and if you don’t want all of your data to be harvested by unscrupulous hackers, it’s worth taking a few precautions.

The Reality of Open Networks
Hackers can exploit networks of this kind in several easy ways. To begin with, they might get into the local router, and intercept data packets that are on their way to an email account or even a bank.
You might also be tricked into signing into an innocent-seeming network that actually belongs to a hacker. If you sit down on a lawn, open your laptop, and see a network called ‘Library WiFi’, then you might be tempted to access it without a second thought. But doing so could be a major error – so make sure that the network in question is legitimate.
Avoiding Common Student Cybersecurity Mistakes
Students often blunder when it comes to online security. In fact, even computer science students can be guilty of a handful of simple mistakes.
You might be tempted to log into personal websites using devices reserved for school-related work. This, as well as disrupting your productivity, can create an opportunity for personal details to be stolen.
There’s also the danger of weak passwords, and passwords that are casually shared with friends. You might also be tempted to recycle passwords on many different sites. Don’t do this; get a password manager instead.
Finally, there are social networks and websites that are inherently risky. When you’re studying, stick to content you know is safe.
Why VPNs Should Be Part of Your Study Kit
If you want to use public WiFi without worrying about your data being intercepted, then the best approach is often to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This will encrypt all the data you’re sending, including your logins and bank details, and route them through an external server. If you trust the owners of that server, then you’ll be much more secure – and most mainstream VPN providers are far more trustworthy than any random WiFi network you might stumble upon.
VPNs are often easily installed and activated. For instance, a VPN Chrome extension might vastly improve your security with just a few clicks!
Affordable Security Options for Students
You don’t always have to spend a lot of money to keep your online activities secure and private. In fact, much of the time you won’t have to spend any money at all. Many operating systems come with built-in firewalls and anti-spyware programs. On top of that, there are security-focused browsers, like LibreWolf and Tor, which offer added features for free!
