David Beckham's IM8 Joins NBA as Global Basketball League Expands Commercial Partnerships Across Asia
16 Oct 2026

David Beckham's wellness brand IM8 has signed a multi-year partnership with the NBA across nine markets, while Nestlé's new agreement spanning 21 countries reinforces the basketball league's growing international commercial strategy.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is expanding its international commercial partnerships, with David Beckham's health and longevity brand IM8 becoming the league's Official Nutrition Partner across Australia and eight Southeast Asian markets. Announced on 12 October 2026, the multi-year agreement marks another step in the NBA's efforts to connect global brands with its growing international basketball audience.
The partnership covers Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. IM8, co-founded by David Beckham and entrepreneur Danny Yeung, will introduce NBA-themed marketing campaigns, regional fan experiences and brand activations, including a planned presence at NBA House in 2027.
The announcement follows another significant commercial agreement between the NBA and Nestlé, covering 21 markets across four continents. Together, the partnerships demonstrate how the league is using its global sporting influence to attract companies seeking international consumer growth, particularly in Asia and other markets where basketball has an established following.
David Beckham's IM8 Targets Southeast Asia's Basketball Audience
The IM8 partnership was announced at an event in Hong Kong attended by Beckham, Yeung, NBA executives and two-time NBA champion Chris Bosh. The agreement gives the health and longevity brand access to the NBA's regional marketing platforms and fan engagement opportunities across nine countries.
For IM8, the partnership provides an opportunity to develop brand recognition in markets where the NBA has invested in basketball participation, media distribution and community engagement. Beckham's longstanding popularity across Asia adds another dimension to the collaboration, connecting his international sporting profile with the league's basketball audience.
The agreement also reflects the growing commercial relationship between professional sport and the health and wellness industry. Through NBA-associated campaigns and events, IM8 aims to connect with consumers interested in nutrition, fitness and performance.
Unlike a conventional player endorsement, the partnership gives IM8 a regional association with the league itself, allowing coordinated marketing across multiple countries.
Nestlé Signs NBA Partnership Across 21 Countries
The NBA's international commercial strategy extends beyond IM8. On 7 October, the league announced a multi-year partnership with Nestlé, making Milo, Nesquik and Nescau official NBA partners across 21 markets in four continents.
The collaboration, which begins on 1 January 2027, represents Nestlé's largest international brand partnership to date. It will incorporate NBA branding, retail promotions, fan experiences and youth basketball development programmes, including Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA and NBA Basketball School initiatives.
Nestlé has set a target of encouraging 2.5 million young people to participate in basketball activities over three years. The company plans to measure the programme through participation, consumer engagement, brand growth and household penetration.
The agreement provides an example of how multinational companies can combine global sporting partnerships with locally organised activities. Instead of relying exclusively on advertising, Nestlé intends to connect its brands with basketball participation and community experiences across different markets.
NBA Returns to Macao as China Remains an Important Market
The league's expansion strategy also includes a renewed emphasis on China, historically one of its most important international markets.
The NBA staged two preseason games between the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks in Macao on 9 and 11 October 2026, continuing its return to the region following the resumption of preseason games there in 2025. The programme included fan experiences, youth basketball activities and community events alongside the games.
The league's commercial relationship with China experienced significant disruption in 2019, following a social media post by then-Houston Rockets executive Daryl Morey supporting protests in Hong Kong. The subsequent backlash affected broadcasting arrangements, sponsorships and other commercial relationships.
The return of NBA games to Macao reflects efforts to maintain and rebuild the league's connection with basketball audiences in the region. It also illustrates the importance of live sporting events in supporting international commercial partnerships beyond broadcasting and merchandise sales.
Why International Partnerships Matter to the NBA's Business
The NBA's global commercial strategy increasingly combines broadcasting, digital engagement, consumer products, live events and regional sponsorship agreements.
Partnerships such as IM8 and Nestlé allow businesses to access established basketball audiences without developing separate sponsorship arrangements in every market. For the NBA, these agreements create opportunities to extend its commercial reach while supporting local basketball activities and fan engagement.
The two agreements also demonstrate the flexibility of the league's partnership model.
| Partnership | Markets covered | Commercial focus |
|---|---|---|
| IM8 | 9 markets across Australia and Southeast Asia | Nutrition, wellness, regional marketing and fan experiences |
| Nestlé | 21 markets across 4 continents | Food and beverage branding, youth basketball participation and retail engagement |
| NBA China Games | Macao | Live basketball events, fan engagement and regional market development |
International expansion does not depend exclusively on establishing permanent NBA franchises outside North America. Regional marketing agreements, preseason games, youth programmes and digital distribution allow the league to strengthen its presence in individual markets while maintaining its existing competition structure.
However, the commercial value of international popularity varies between countries. Consumer spending power, local sporting preferences, media distribution and political conditions can all influence how effectively international audiences translate into business growth.
Basketball's Growing Role in Global Sport and Consumer Culture
The NBA's international influence extends beyond basketball competitions. Its players, teams and associated brands have played an important role in fashion, entertainment, digital culture and consumer marketing for decades.
From Michael Jordan's association with Nike to the international visibility of today's NBA stars, basketball has developed into a cultural platform capable of connecting sports audiences with wider consumer industries.
For brands such as IM8 and Nestlé, this cultural influence provides an opportunity to communicate with consumers through sporting identities and experiences rather than conventional advertising alone.
The latest partnerships reflect the NBA's continued efforts to develop international markets through commercial relationships, grassroots participation and live sporting events. As more companies seek opportunities to connect with basketball audiences worldwide, the league's ability to combine sport, culture and regional business partnerships remains central to its international growth strategy.
