Dolly Parton Dies at 80, Leaving a Seven-Decade Legacy Across Music, Film and Philanthropy

The country music icon, actress, entrepreneur and founder of the Imagination Library died peacefully in Nashville on 25 August 2026, according to an official announcement from her representatives.

Nashville, Tennessee — 25 August 2026 — Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, bringing to a close one of the most influential careers in American popular culture.

An official announcement distributed by True Public Relations on behalf of the Dolly Parton Estate said the singer, songwriter, actress, author and philanthropist died peacefully in Nashville on Tuesday. Her death has also been reported by People. (People.com)

Parton was born Dolly Rebecca Parton on 19 January 1946 in Sevier County, Tennessee. Over seven decades, she developed from a young Appalachian songwriter into a global entertainment figure whose work crossed country, pop, film, television, theatre, business and philanthropy.

From the Smoky Mountains to Global Stardom

Parton grew up as one of 12 children in East Tennessee and began writing songs when she was five years old. By the age of 10, she was appearing on local radio and television. At 13, she performed at the Grand Ole Opry.

After moving to Nashville, she signed with Monument Records in 1965 and later became a regular performer on The Porter Wagoner Show.

Her early solo success included songs such as “Joshua,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene” and “My Tennessee Mountain Home.”

Parton eventually left Porter Wagoner’s show in 1974. Her departure inspired “I Will Always Love You,” one of the defining songs of her career and later a worldwide hit when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard.

A Career That Moved Beyond Country Music

Parton’s influence extended far beyond Nashville.

In 1980, she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5, while her title song topped the Billboard Hot 100, country and adult contemporary charts. She later appeared in films including Steel Magnolias, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Rhinestone.

Her collaborations also crossed genres and generations. Among the most recognised was “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers.

Across her career, Parton won 11 Grammy Awards, received 54 Grammy nominations and earned honours from the Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music and Kennedy Center. She entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Dollywood and a Business Empire

Parton also became an influential entrepreneur.

She opened Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 1986. The attraction and its related businesses eventually became major economic drivers for East Tennessee, drawing millions of visitors each year.

Her wider commercial ventures grew across hospitality, food, cosmetics, fashion, entertainment and consumer products.

However, Parton consistently connected her commercial success with the communities that shaped her.

The Imagination Library Became a Global Legacy

One of Parton’s most significant projects came outside entertainment.

She founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995, inspired partly by her father, who could not read or write.

The programme provides free books to children from birth to age five and has distributed more than 300 million books worldwide, according to the official career biography accompanying the announcement.

Her philanthropic work also supported education, healthcare and disaster relief.

The Dolly Parton Estate said her legacy would be defined not only by her music but by her “love, compassion, and resilience.”

Family Requests Private Service

Parton’s husband of 59 years, Carl Thomas Dean, died in 2025.

According to the family announcement, Parton requested a small private service for immediate family. Fans have been invited to leave tributes through her official website and social media channels.

The family has asked that people wishing to honour Parton consider making donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library instead of sending flowers.

A Cultural Legacy Larger Than Country Music

Dolly Parton’s importance cannot be measured solely through record sales or awards.

She became one of the rare artists able to remain culturally relevant across generations while maintaining a distinctive public identity.

Her songwriting gave country music some of its most enduring stories. Her films introduced her to audiences far beyond Nashville. Her businesses transformed her hometown region, while her literacy work reached millions of children.

In August 2026, only days before her death, her official website celebrated 82 new international sales certifications across 14 countries, underlining the continuing global reach of her catalogue. (Dolly Parton)

Her representatives summed up that legacy in the official announcement: her songs would continue to reach new generations, while the impact of her philanthropic work would endure long beyond her lifetime.
