Hong Kong Launches HKGXTS to Modernise Gold Trading Infrastructure

Hong Kong Gold Exchange Trading System Limited will build a new gold trading, clearing and settlement platform with support from Hundsun Technologies and Alibaba Cloud.

Hong Kong — 18 August 2026 — Hong Kong has taken another step towards strengthening its position as an international gold trading centre.

Hong Kong Gold Exchange Trading System Limited (HKGXTS) has officially launched as a joint venture between the Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX) and TGX Technology Limited (TGX).

The new company plans to build a unified gold trading and clearing platform. It will also work with Hundsun Technologies and Alibaba Cloud on the project.

HKGXTS expects pilot operations to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

HKGXTS Plans a Unified Gold Trading Platform

The first phase will bring HKGX’s existing products and services into one system.

That includes:

  • trading;
  • settlement;
  • clearing;
  • physical gold services;
  • and related market functions.

As a result, HKGXTS aims to simplify how market participants access Hong Kong’s gold infrastructure.

The company also plans to expand electronic trading hours over time.

Gold Tokenisation Is Part of the Roadmap

HKGXTS also wants to explore digital gold services.

Chairman Dr. Haywood Cheung said the company plans to introduce services linked to gold tokenisation at a later stage.

In addition, HKGXTS wants to combine traditional gold trading with Web3 and AI technologies.

The aim is to make physical gold more flexible as a financial asset while keeping real-world bullion at the centre of the system.

Multi-Currency Settlement Could Expand International Access

HKGXTS CEO and Director Sun Ho said the platform will support a multi-tier bullion trading model.

The company also plans to develop multi-currency pricing and settlement.

Therefore, international institutions could gain easier access to Hong Kong’s gold market.

HKGXTS will also assess future links with clearing systems, banks and regulatory infrastructure.

Alibaba Cloud and Hundsun Support the Technology Build

Several technology partners will support the platform.

TGX Technology will manage the overall design and project governance.

Meanwhile, Hundsun Technologies will support delivery of the core trading system.

Alibaba Cloud will provide cloud infrastructure and future AI capabilities.

Together, the partners aim to build a system that is secure, scalable and suitable for international market use.

Hong Kong Is Expanding Its Gold Market Infrastructure

The project supports Hong Kong’s wider ambition to develop as an international gold trading centre.

As the platform grows, HKGXTS plans to explore links with:

  • banking infrastructure;
  • central clearing systems;
  • regulatory reporting systems;
  • and international markets.

This could help strengthen Hong Kong’s role in regional precious metals trading.

At the same time, the platform may create new digital routes into the bullion market.

Why This Matters for Gold Traders

The project could change how traders and institutions interact with gold in Hong Kong.

First, a unified platform may reduce friction between trading and settlement.

Second, extended electronic trading could improve access across time zones.

Third, multi-currency settlement may make the market more attractive to international participants.

Finally, future tokenisation services could create new ways to trade and hold exposure to physical gold.

However, those later developments will depend on regulation, market demand and technical execution.

Pilot Operations Expected in Q1 2027

HKGXTS expects the first pilot phase to begin in Q1 2027.

The initial focus will remain on core gold trading, clearing and settlement.

After that, the company plans to explore digital assets, real-world asset tokenisation and cross-market connectivity.

If successful, the project could become an important part of Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure strategy.
