How China Is Becoming a Hub for Green and Sustainable Business

How China Is Becoming a Hub for Green and Sustainable Business
China is changing, and a recent push into sustainable business and green energy has put it at the forefront of a renewable revolution.

When people think of China and its businesses, they may immediately think of its belching factories and manufacturing plants. This does have an element of truth within it, with the country being the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide on the planet. Yet China is changing, and a recent push into sustainable business and green energy has put it at the forefront of a renewable revolution.

China's Green Energy Push

The plains of the Mongolian desert are good for very little. The scorching sun renders the land barren and makes most areas all but inhospitable for everyone but the most hardy of shepherds. Yet a massive solar development has turned the area's light into a source of renewable energy. With panels that shield the ground from the sun, it is also bringing fertility back to the soil.

By no means is this huge infrastructure project an isolated incident. Industries that specialise in clean energy drove 90% of China's growth in 2025. This has included the manufacture and export of batteries, solar panels, wind, and related technologies.  Historically, 2026 is set to be the year when the use of solar power is set to overtake that of coal.

Why Sustainability Remains Important to Businesses

Over the last few years, the once insatiable drive for sustainability has waned somewhat. Yet it is still vital for businesses. First, it provides a reduction in costs. As energy prices rise, a way to lower bills and operating costs is something every business must consider. This also positions companies for long-term success. Businesses that commit to sustainability also show that they have a mission, which can attract investors and top-level talent to them who may have previously overlooked their company.

There are even businesses in industries you may not expect that are committing to sustainability. Online casinos, the providers of digital table games and slots, have even seen some operators begin to turn to sustainability. These companies use what is often the overlooked factor when it comes to energy consumption: servers. By committing funds to offset this, some have prioritized tree planting, coastal clean-ups, and community support.

Is the Sun Still Shining on China’s Sustainable Project?

Without this injection of clean energy, China's government would have missed its targets for growth by 5%. Their building sector has been a notorious burden on them over the last few years, as overconstruction caused huge economic problems in the country. Yet this burst in activity may be something that has also spilled over to the clean energy sector.

So many solar panels have now been built that China has driven prices down. Items that cost around 20–22 cents per watt in 2020 are now worth around  13–14 cents per watt. This has now led to stricter rules on new projects, with some factories beginning a shutdown.

What is bad for China's economy can only be a good thing for other countries, as export prices have also fallen. This makes it a great time for businesses to invest in wind and solar, and show their sustainable credentials.
