Why the process matters more than the estimate
Most people shopping for paving work compare price per square foot and call it a day. That number means little on its own. Two contractors can quote the same square footage and deliver very different results, because the process behind the number is what determines how long the surface lasts.
George Stanley, owner of a paving company based in Tulare, California, has spent years running paving and general construction projects, from residential driveways to larger commercial lots. His view on process comes from doing the work, not from reading about it. He argues that most paving problems trace back to a step that got rushed or skipped early on, long before the asphalt truck ever shows up.
Step one: reading the ground before touching it
Paving starts underground, not on top of it. Before any material gets laid, the site needs to be assessed for drainage, soil type, and existing damage. Water is the biggest long-term threat to any paved surface, so figuring out where it flows, and where it pools, has to happen first.
Stanley says this step gets skipped more than people realize, especially on smaller residential jobs where homeowners want the crew to move fast. A contractor who spends real time here, instead of rushing to grading, is doing the job the way it should be done.
What a proper site assessment includes
- Checking the slope for water runoff
- Testing soil stability where the surface will sit
- Identifying cracks or settling in any existing pavement
- Marking utility lines before excavation
Skipping any of these steps does not usually cause a problem on day one. It shows up eighteen months later, as cracking, potholes, or standing water.
Step two: excavation and base preparation
Once the site is understood, the crew removes the old surface if needed and digs down to create room for a proper base layer. The base is what carries the weight of everything on top of it, vehicles, foot traffic, seasonal freeze and thaw. A thin or poorly compacted base is one of the most common reasons pavement fails early.
Base material typically gets laid in layers and compacted at each stage, not dumped in all at once. Compaction takes time and equipment passes. This is a place where speed and quality work against each other. A crew trying to finish a job in one day instead of two will often shortcut compaction, and the surface pays for it later.
Step three: laying and finishing the surface
With the base in place, the paving material goes down, whether that is asphalt or concrete. Temperature, timing, and even weather on the day of the pour affect how well the material sets. Asphalt needs to be laid within a certain temperature window to bond correctly. Concrete needs proper curing time before it takes any load.
Stanley's approach is to treat this stage as the payoff for everything that came before it, not the whole job. A crew that nailed the site prep but rushes the finish can still end up with an uneven surface or one that cracks under the first hard freeze.
Common finishing mistakes
- Pouring or laying material in the wrong weather conditions
- Not allowing enough cure or set time before use
- Skipping proper edge and joint work, which is where cracking often starts
Step four: what happens after the crew leaves
A paving job is not finished when the crew packs up. Sealing, drainage checks, and a plan for basic maintenance all matter for how long the work lasts. Stanley tells clients that a paved surface is not a install-it-and-forget-it product. It needs occasional attention, the same way a roof or a vehicle does.
He also thinks the industry does a poor job explaining this to customers up front. Many people assume paving is a one-time expense. In reality, a surface that gets basic upkeep can last significantly longer than one that never gets checked after the first year.
Where projects actually go wrong
Stanley points to two recurring issues on jobs that fail early: bad drainage planning and rushed base compaction. Both happen at the start of the process, both are hard to fix after the fact, and both are invisible to a customer looking at a finished, smooth-looking surface.
His advice for property owners evaluating a paving job is simple. Ask the contractor to walk through drainage and base prep before asking about the surface material. A contractor who cannot explain that part clearly is one worth being cautious about.
What good process looks like from the outside
Customers cannot inspect soil compaction themselves, but they can watch for signs of a contractor who takes the early steps seriously. A crew that spends visible time on grading and base work, rather than moving straight to the finish layer, is usually one that understands where pavement actually fails.
Stanley's take is that paving is a sequence, not a single task. Each step sets up the one after it, and none of them can be skipped without cost showing up somewhere down the line.
