How Siemens Technology Center Bolsters Germany’s Innovation Strength

The Siemens Technology Center (STC) at the Garching Research Campus north of Munich, Germany, is a hub to research and innovation with an investment exceeding €100 million. Set up as part of the broader Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystem, the Centre is positioned alongside institutions like the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and leading companies.

How Siemens Technology Center Bolsters Germany’s Innovation Strength

Siemens has marked a significant milestone with the opening of its largest global research hub, the Siemens Technology Center (STC), located at the esteemed Garching Research Campus near Munich. With more than €100 million investment, this advanced facility demonstrates Siemens’ commitment to fostering innovation and strengthening Germany’s position as a global leader in technological advancement.

The STC represents more than a physical space; it embodies an open research and innovation ecosystem designed to foster collaboration with academic institutions, research organisations, and industry partners. Positioned alongside the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the Max Planck Institute, and companies like SAP, the STC benefits from a vibrant environment conducive to groundbreaking research and development. With over 28,000 individuals working at this hub, the Garching Research Campus has emerged as a prominent centre for scientific research and academic excellence in Europe.

“No one can solve the current challenges alone. We must accelerate collaboration with our customers and partners in the early stages of development. The Siemens Technology Center, located on the same campus with TUM, international research institutions and companies, benefits from an excellent environment and will strengthen Germany’s global role in cutting-edge research,” said Peter Körte, Chief Technology and Chief Strategy Officer of Siemens AG.

In its initial phase, the STC will house around 450 Siemens researchers collaborating with 150 scientists from TUM. The centre will focus on developing future technologies, with a particular emphasis on data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). Siemens, boasting approximately 3,700 AI patents, aims to employ these technologies to improve programming, identify manufacturing problems early, and facilitate human-machine communication.

Siemens builds the STC to the highest environmental regulations, demonstrating its continued commitment to sustainability. Siemens Real Estate created and built the recently opened facility, which is expected to receive LEED Gold certification in accordance with Siemens’ objective of becoming climate-neutral in its operations by 2030.

Siemens’ dedication to innovation is further underscored by its increased investment in research and development, totalling €6.2 billion in fiscal 2023. These investments focus on strengthening Siemens’ core technologies, including Simulation & Digital Twin, Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence, Connectivity & Edge, Future of Automation, and Cybersecurity & Trust.

Global Research and Innovation Ecosystems

Siemens experts engage in joint research with universities, research institutes, academic start-ups, tech incubators, and customers worldwide across 16 Siemens Research and Innovation Ecosystems. The STC in Garching is a crucial part of these ecosystems, demonstrating how global collaboration can address contemporary challenges and accelerate the pace of innovation.

Future Outlook

iemens plans to expand the STC with a second building complex slated for completion in 2027. With over 630 researchers and IP specialists, the STC will solidify its position as Siemens’ largest central research hub globally, contributing to the company’s ongoing pursuit of technological excellence.

This inauguration marks a significant step in Siemens’ journey towards driving innovation and fostering collaboration, reaffirming its commitment to shaping the future of technology.
