Today, Sealy serves as Director of Corporate Strategy at Sealy & Company in Dallas. His role focuses on long-term planning, evaluating opportunities, and helping align different parts of the business. What makes his perspective unique is that he did not arrive there by staying in one department. Instead, he spent years learning the business from multiple angles.
“A big part of my role is connecting ideas and perspectives from across the business,” Sealy says. “Good strategy comes from understanding how all of those pieces fit together and making sure today's decisions support where we're trying to go over the long term.”
That idea has guided his career from the beginning.
How Michael Sealy’s Early Years Shaped His Work Ethic
Michael Sealy grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, in a family where business and responsibility were part of everyday life. His father, Scott Sealy Sr., built a long career in commercial real estate, giving Michael an early look at the industry.
“I was raised around hard work and accountability,” Sealy says. “That stays with you.”
At Loyola College Prep, he was active in sports and played on the school's state runner-up football team during his senior year. The experience helped teach him lessons that would later prove valuable in business.
“Football taught me that success rarely comes from individual effort alone,” he says. “You learn discipline, you learn to trust the people around you, and you learn that everyone has a role in achieving the outcome.”
Those lessons became part of how he approached both leadership and career development.
Education and the Start of a Commercial Real Estate Career
After high school, Sealy attended Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1999 with a degree in economics and a minor in anthropology.
The combination may seem unusual, but it helped shape how he thinks.
“Looking back, those two fields complemented each other really well,” he says. “Economics taught me how markets and businesses function, while anthropology reminded me that every decision ultimately comes back to people.”
After graduation, he joined Colliers International as a leasing broker. The role gave him first-hand exposure to transactions, negotiations, and client relationships.
“You learn quickly how deals actually happen,” Sealy says. “It is not just about numbers. It is about people, timing, and execution.”
The experience gave him a practical foundation. It also sparked an idea that would define much of his career.
Why Michael Sealy Chose to Learn Every Part of the Business
In late 2000, Sealy joined Sealy & Company. Instead of building expertise in a single discipline, he moved through multiple functions within the organization.
Over the years, he worked as a Construction Manager, Analyst, Development Manager, VP of Capital Markets, Chief Capital Markets Officer, and eventually Director of Corporate Strategy.
“I never wanted to spend my career looking at real estate through just one lens,” Sealy says. “Every role gave me a different perspective, and over time I realized that understanding how those pieces connect makes you a better decision-maker.”
This became one of the defining themes of his professional life.
Many people build careers by going deeper into one specialty. Sealy took a broader route. He wanted to understand how construction affected development. How development affected capital. And how strategy depended on understanding both.
“When you understand execution, capital, and development, you see the bigger picture,” he says.
That perspective now influences the decisions he helps make every day.
What Does a Director of Corporate Strategy Actually Do?
In his current role, Sealy focuses on long-term planning and organizational alignment.
Rather than concentrating on individual transactions, he helps evaluate opportunities and support broader business objectives.
“Strategy isn't about a single acquisition or development project,” he says. “It's about understanding how decisions made today influence the business years from now and making sure those decisions continue moving the company in the right direction.”
His responsibilities include assessing opportunities, supporting strategic initiatives, and helping different departments stay aligned.
“Good strategy is not separate from execution,” Sealy says. “They have to move together.”
That belief reflects the practical experience he gained throughout his career.
Leadership Through Experience, Not Titles
One of the most consistent themes in Sealy’s career is respect for process.
Because he has worked across multiple functions, he understands the challenges different teams face.
“When you have done the work, you respect the process,” he says.
He believes effective leadership starts with listening.
“The best decisions are rarely made in isolation,” he says. “I think you get better outcomes when you bring together people with different experiences and different perspectives because they often see opportunities or risks that someone else might miss.”
That approach has helped him transition from operational roles into strategic leadership while maintaining a practical mindset.
Community, Conservation, and Long-Term Thinking
Outside of business, Sealy is deeply involved in wildlife conservation and community organizations.
His interests include hunting, fishing, shooting sporting clays, and managing land for wildlife and waterfowl habitats.
“I've always enjoyed spending time outdoors, and conservation has become an important part of that,” he says. “There's something rewarding about improving land in a way that benefits wildlife and preserves it for future generations.”
He is also active with the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and supports the Momentous Institute. Through volunteer work and charitable involvement, he stays connected to causes that matter beyond business.
“Community involvement keeps you grounded,” Sealy says. “It reminds you that impact goes beyond business.”
The Career Lesson Behind Michael Sealy’s Success
If there is one lesson that emerges from Sealy’s career, it is the value of understanding how things work together.
His success did not come from mastering one narrow area. It came from learning how different parts of a business connect.
“Experience has a way of changing how you see opportunities,” he says. “The more you understand, the better decisions you can make.”
In a business world that often rewards speed, Sealy’s career reflects a different approach. Learn broadly. Stay curious. Understand the process. Then use that knowledge to help move the bigger picture forward.
“Nothing happens overnight,” he says. “You build it piece by piece.”
