Natural Farming and Artificial Intelligence: A New Path for India's Future

Dilip Pungliya

Natural Farming, Artificial Intelligence

Natural Farming and Artificial Intelligence: A New Path for India's Future

I do not come from an agricultural background, yet I found myself deeply connected to the world of Farming during my recent work on integrating AI into agriculture.

This connection grew even stronger when I had the privilege of attending a program at Agriculture College,Pune MPKV Rahuri,, where the Honourable Governor Shri Acharya Devvrat delivered an inspiring two-hour address that was not a speech but a simple presentation drawn from his personal experiences and scientific studies.

Listening to him speak about natural Farming, its roots in India's ancient wisdom, and its power to improve farmer income, soil health, water resources, and human well-being, I realised that natural Farming is not only a method of cultivation. It is a movement for India's future.

His words encouraged me to think deeply:

What if we combine India's ancient natural farming wisdom with the advanced capabilities of Technology?

I am on a journey to articulate my vision, inspired by my understanding of Technology, the Government of India's Natural Farming initiatives called National Mission On Natural Farming (NMNF), and insights gained from the seminar.

Natural Farming Means

The Government of India describes natural Farming as a chemical-free, ecological, and farmer-centric approach that restores soil fertility, cuts input costs, and increases sustainability.

According to the Natural Farming Book by Shri Acharya Devvrat or from seminar Natural Farming uses no synthetic fertilisers or pesticides.

It depends on local resources, farm-made formulations such as Jeevamrit and Beejamrit, and natural pest management.

Mulching, intercropping, biodiversity, and soil care lie at the heart of the system.

It improves farmer income, soil health, biodiversity, and water conservation.

States like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, UP and many others have already trained and onboarded lakhs of farmers.

Natural Farming is not new. It is rooted in the same principles our ancestors used, farming in harmony with nature, not against it.

Farming, a Sacred Responsibility

During the Natural Farming program at Agriculture College, MPKV Rahuri, Honorable Governor Acharya Devvrat delivered a heartfelt message that inspired all present.

  • Natural Farming embodies a powerful return to our civilisational roots.
  • It nurtures the soil, safeguards the water, purifies the air, protects the animals, and uplifts the people.
  • Natural Farming nourishes the environment while delivering abundant yields.
  • It empowers farmers to break free from chemical dependency and the burden of debt.
  • Healthy food energises vibrant families and nurtures a thriving nation, helping combat rising diseases such as cancer and diabetes linked to chemical farming practices.
  • His book Prakrutik Krishi inspires readers with practical natural farming methods, highlights the vital role of desi cows, and guides farmers on their transformative journey to a chemical-free system.

The most powerful takeaway for me was simple yet profound:

“Nature is the best teacher. When we care for nature, nature takes care of us.”

Why Natural Farming Matters Today

India is currently navigating a landscape filled with significant agricultural challenges.

  • Soil is losing organic carbon
  • Overuse of water
  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Farmer debt due to input-heavy farming
  • Pesticide contamination affecting food and health

Natural Farming provides solutions that are:

  • Low-cost
  • Sustainable
  • Climate-resilient
  • Healthy for soil, farmers, and consumers
  • Community-friendly
  • Future-proof

India is making remarkable strides in its agricultural landscape, with over 10 lakh hectares already dedicated to natural farming! This exciting shift reflects the country’s commitment to sustainable practices and a healthier ecosystem. The transformation is not just a trend; it’s a movement towards a greener future for farming.

A Vision for India

The future of agriculture in India is a dynamic fusion of time-honoured traditions and cutting-edge science. By merging ancient wisdom with modern innovations, we can cultivate a sustainable path forward for farming that honours our rich heritage while embracing today's advancements.

Natural Farming = Our roots

AI + Digital Platforms = Our wings

Together, they can:

  • Improve farmer income
  • Protect soil and water
  • Reduce pesticide use
  • Strengthen food security
  • Create climate-resilient Farming
  • Build global leadership for India in sustainable agriculture

A New Era Begins

My journey into agriculture began unexpectedly, but it opened my eyes to something powerful:

India already has the knowledge to farm sustainably.

What we need now is technology to scale it.

Hearing Shri Acharya Devvrat's message truly helps me to think that natural farming is more than just a technique; it embodies our national duty and presents a remarkable opportunity on a global scale.

With initiatives like Citiesabc Impakt Agriculture Platform, AI.DNA tools and natural farming policies by the Government of India, we can create a future where:

  • Farmers earn more
  • Soil becomes healthier
  • Water is conserved
  • Food becomes nutritious
  • Nature heals
  • India leads the world in sustainable Farming

The seeds are already planted.

Now it's time for us to help them grow.
