Security in the Age of Digital Banking: How Jet Bank Protects Its Customers

Security in the Age of Digital Banking: How Jet Bank Protects Its Customers

When a bank exists entirely through a mobile application with no physical branches, no teller windows, no in-person interactions; the question of security becomes the most fundamental question a potential customer can ask. For Jet Bank, Albania's first fully digital bank, security is not a product feature; it is the foundation on which the entire institution is built.

CEO Fatbardha Rino addressed this directly in her interview on Top Channel's Top Story, one of the most watched programs on Albanian television. She explained that Jet Bank's security architecture is built on internationally tested platforms rather than custom-built systems, precisely because those platforms have already been proven across regulated financial markets in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The complexity of these systems, she emphasized, should be invisible to the customer, what the customer experiences is simplicity; what operates beneath it is a multilayered security infrastructure.

The technology partners supporting that infrastructure include globally recognized names. As Rino has described in various interviews, Jet Bank's ecosystem includes companies whose platforms form the backbone of digital banking systems across multiple continents. Cloudflare, for example, provides network security and performance infrastructure used by financial institutions worldwide. Jumio handles identity verification and anti-money laundering compliance through biometric authentication. Together with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Microsoft Azure, and Amazon Web Services for hosting and data processing, these partnerships form a security stack that meets international banking standards from day one.

The question of data protection has also been addressed from a regulatory standpoint. As Rino noted during discussions covered by ekofin.al, Jet Bank is committed to EU standards, including GDPR, cybersecurity frameworks, and modern compliance requirements. In a fully digital bank, where personal and financial data flows entirely through digital channels, GDPR compliance is not merely a legal checkbox, it determines how customer data is collected, stored, processed, and protected, and what rights customers have over their own information.

The Bank of Albania's licensing process provided an additional layer of external verification. According to Rino, the licensing procedure included rigorous assessments conducted by nine local and international institutions, covering not only governance and capital structure but also operational readiness and security standards. The bank was required to demonstrate that its systems met the requirements applied to any licensed banking institution in Albania, regardless of whether it operates through branches or an app.

This scrutiny matters because the risks in digital banking are real and well documented. Across Europe, digital-first institutions have faced cybersecurity threats, phishing attempts, and fraud attempts targeting their customers. The Albanian market, where digital banking is new and consumer education around cybersecurity is still developing, represents a particular responsibility. Dr. Besarta Tafa highlighted this dimension in her analysis published by gazetadita.al, noting that financial literacy and cybersecurity awareness are areas where further investment will be needed as digital banking expands.

For Fatbardha Rino, the response to this challenge is the same as the response to every challenge Jet Bank has faced in building Albania's first fully digital bank: build on proven foundations, operate transparently, and let the technology and the regulators speak for themselves.
