The Connection Between Poor Lifestyle Habits and Hearing Loss

Even though everybody (or at least a vast majority of people) knows how crucial good hearing health is, it often feels as if many of us tend to neglect it, focusing a lot more on other aspects of our well-being.

But the reality is that solid hearing health isn’t always easy to have, particularly if you generally do not take care of yourself properly. Now, a lot of people are not aware of the link between their lifestyle and hearing loss, thinking that they do not go hand in hand, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In fact, they interconnect in ways you cannot possibly imagine, and if you are not sure how, then you should definitely keep going through this article because it’s about to provide you with some very useful information concerning this topic.

The Connection Between Poor Lifestyle Habits and Hearing Loss

Constant Exposure To Loud Noises

There are lots of professions in the world that practically force you to constantly be surrounded by loud noises and since that’s something that you cannot avoid, then the least you can do is to employ something that’s going to safeguard your ears.

In these types of situations, many people resort to various hearing protection solutions, like noise-canceling headphones, or anything else that can effectively block out external noise, or at least decrease it.

As previously concluded, many jobs require people to be exposed to extremely loud noises, such as these:

  • Military
  • Agriculture
  • Plumbing
  • Carpentry
  • Manufacturing
  • Mining
  • Transportation

Speaking of loud noises, there are also a lot of people who hurt their hearing health by continuously listening to loud music, which can be quite detrimental to their ears. Therefore, if you do not want to stop listening to loud music permanently, then at least make sure not to do it as frequently.

But what are you going to do if you suddenly start experiencing some hearing problems? The best thing that you can do is to immediately go to a hearing aid doctor to see what can be done to restore your hearing loss. This is surely your safest bet, because, after all, these professionals have the necessary tools, skills, and knowledge to properly care for your hearing needs.

Smoking Impacts Your Hearing Too!

There are habits that are generally unhealthy (regardless of this topic) and that should be eliminated for good if you want not only to remain healthy, but prevent any damage to your hearing health as well.

This refers to smoking, which is one of the worst things that you can do for your body. Aside from being one of the biggest causes of all kinds of health issues, such as cancer, heart-related diseases, and many others, it can also contribute to hearing loss.

That’s all due to different chemicals that are released into the bloodstream that impact the receptors that are responsible for hearing sounds that aren’t too loud. This type of damage is oftentimes acute and cannot always be reversed.

Speaking of this, people who are currently smoking have more than a fifteen percent higher chance of dealing with hearing loss. Of course, chain smokers are at a greater risk, in comparison to lighter smokers.

Unfortunately, even the ones who are second-hand smokers are at risk of hearing loss if they are exposed to smoke for over ten hours weekly.

Being Overweight

Just like smoking, being overweight isn’t generally good for your health and it has been concluded numerous times before that those who are obese are at a higher risk of dealing with a variety of health issues, like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

All of this extra weight puts a lot of pressure on the circulatory system, resulting in your blood pressure spike, and, at the same time, it limits capable blood flow. When these two factors “join forces”, together they seriously damage hearing health, which is something not many people are aware of.

And that can easily happen over time if you do not lose weight and/or treat high blood pressure. Both of these things will not only prevent any damage to your hearing but will also help you lead a long and healthy life!

Being Sedentary All The Time

It is widely known how beneficial exercising is, and, on the flip side, not being physically active is very harmful not only for your physical health, but mentally too. And since hearing loss is the main topic today, you should know that a sedentary lifestyle can negatively influence it as well.

You may not see an instant connection between these two, but many studies have shown that those who are pretty passive are at a greater risk of hearing loss. Now, if you are generally not too fond of exercising, yet you want to be relatively active, then you should opt for things that aren’t too physically challenging, yet that will help you stay in shape and healthy.

The best examples of it are a regular walk, Pilates, and/or yoga, so be sure to do one of these exercises because they are generally pretty light, yet very beneficial for your overall well-being, including your hearing health.

Not Taking Care Of Your Teeth Comes With Consequences As Well!

There’s no need to remind you that poor dental hygiene is detrimental not only to your teeth but your overall health. It can also impact your hearing health. So what leads to this outcome? Namely, the bacteria that’s in your mouth can easily enter the bloodstream, leading to serious inflammation that can narrow down the arteries, which causes poor blood circulation.

And then all of this can result in numerous heart problems that can negatively influence your hearing health. Consequently, it’s pivotal to be very responsible about your oral health, to brush and floss your teeth on a regular basis, and, of course, to visit your dentist at least twice a year, or whenever you have any dental problems.

The Connection Between Poor Lifestyle Habits and Hearing Loss

Although our body can be very resilient and put up with a lot of negative things that most of us do to it, as you can see, there are different lifestyle habits that will at some point damage your hearing health.
