- At the Smart City Expo World Congress held in Barcelona, Malaysia has asserted its ambition to emerge as ASEAN’s digital hub, unveiling plans for a digital economy poised to contribute a remarkable 25.5% to the national GDP by 2025.
- The event, hosted by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) at the prestigious Círculo Ecuestre, brought together technological powerhouses from both Spain and Malaysia, marking a pivotal moment in the global discourse on digital innovation.

Malaysia, currently positioned as one of the world’s most visionary territories in terms of market transformation, is strategically leveraging its digital capabilities. The ambitious goal to contribute 25.5% to the national GDP by 2025 reflects a nation at the forefront of embracing digital technologies.
A convergence of factors, including Malaysia’s strategic ASEAN location, digitally adept population, multicultural diversity, access to capital and regional markets, business-friendly ecosystem, regulatory certainty, and high quality of life, establishes the country as an irresistible hub for digital enterprises.
Smart City Ambitions Take Center Stage
The heart of the discussion revolved around Malaysia’s ambitious vision to become a digital hub within the ASEAN region. Acknowledging the critical role of collaboration between government bodies and the private sector, the discourse emphasized the need for effective plan execution. In an era where technology’s innovative edge can diminish over time, Malaysia is keenly focused on maintaining its leadership in the digital landscape.
Rapid Rise of Spain in Digital Sphere
The roundtable discussion also shed light on Spain’s rapid ascent in the digital domain. Spain’s participation in the digital market has surged from 18.7% in 2019 to an impressive 23.2% at present. Applauding Spain’s strides in 5G implementation, covering over 82% of its territory, and its notable position as the third-leading nation in fiber optic adoption within the OECD, the discussion underscored the favorable conditions that have led to an increased presence of Spanish companies in Malaysia.

Datuk Ts. Fadzli Abdul Wahit, Head of Digital Industry Development at MDEC, emphasized the essence of knowledge exchange between nations. Understanding the rationale behind solutions for common challenges is paramount, he noted, emphasizing the need to adapt methodologies to each unique territory, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach falls short.
Fadzli also highlighted a pivotal challenge in the digital economy – the delicate balance required between societal obligations and the benefits generated, underscoring the importance of responsible growth in the digital age.
As Malaysia charts its course to become ASEAN’s digital hub, the Smart City Expo World Congress has served as a platform for global collaboration and discourse, propelling the nation into the forefront of the smart city revolution. The event marks a critical juncture where Malaysia’s digital ambitions align with global innovation, setting the stage for transformative growth and leadership in the digital era.
