AI Agent Engineers Top UK AI Career Opportunities as Hiring Demand Accelerates
09 Oct 2026

New research from Click Intelligence ranks AI Agent Engineer as the UK’s strongest AI career opportunity, combining high salaries, rapid pay growth and thousands of active vacancies.
28 September 2026 — AI-related hiring is expanding rapidly across the UK, with AI Agent Engineers emerging as the strongest career opportunity among 20 specialist roles analysed in new research from Click Intelligence.
The September 2026 study assessed median salary, year-on-year salary growth, job vacancies posted over the previous 12 months and currently active listings. These factors were combined into an AI Job Opportunity Score to rank roles by their overall mix of pay, growth and demand.
AI Agent Engineer ranked first with a score of 97.75, followed by AI Engineer, AI Solutions Architect, Generative AI Specialist and AI Architect.
AI Agent Engineer ranks first
AI Agent Engineer emerged as the strongest overall opportunity in the study.
The role carries a median annual salary of £95,000, while pay has increased by 16.9% year on year. Click Intelligence identified 1,562 vacancies posted over the previous 12 months and 2,395 live job listings.
The research also recorded approximately 597,480 annual searches for the role, indicating strong interest from prospective candidates as agentic AI becomes a more visible part of enterprise technology.
The combination of salary growth, employer demand and candidate interest gave the role the highest opportunity score in the ranking.
AI Engineers command £100,000 median salaries
AI Engineer ranked second with an opportunity score of 93.
The role has a median salary of £100,000, making it one of the highest-paid positions in the study. Salary levels increased by just over 6% year on year.
Employers posted 1,708 vacancies during the previous 12 months, while 1,192 positions remain live.
The continued flow of vacancies suggests businesses are not treating AI engineering as a short-term hiring trend. Instead, companies appear to be building more permanent technical capabilities around model development, deployment and integration.
AI Solutions Architects see the highest annual vacancy volume
AI Solutions Architect ranked third.
Click Intelligence identified 4,304 vacancies posted over the previous year, the largest total among the leading roles, alongside 1,239 currently active jobs.
The position offers a median annual salary of £85,000, up approximately 3% year on year.
Solutions architects occupy an increasingly important position as organisations move from experimenting with AI tools toward integrating them into existing technology infrastructure, workflows and business processes.
Generative AI Specialists lead on live vacancies
Generative AI Specialist ranked fourth overall, but the role currently has the largest number of live vacancies among those examined.
More than 2,500 active listings were identified across UK-based companies, alongside 1,920 vacancies posted during the previous year.
Median pay stands at £82,500.
Interestingly, Click Intelligence recorded only 18,600 annual searches for the role, considerably lower than AI Agent Engineer or AI Engineer.
That gap between employer demand and candidate search interest could indicate a relatively less crowded market for professionals with the right skills.
AI Architect completes the top five
AI Architect ranked fifth with a median salary of £95,000.
The research found 556 vacancies during the previous 12 months and 367 live positions, while salaries increased 2.7% year on year.
Although the overall number of vacancies is lower than some of the leading roles, the salary level reflects the value businesses place on professionals capable of designing broader AI systems and technical architectures.

Demand is spreading beyond traditional technology companies
James Owen, Co-founder and Director at Click Intelligence, said the growth in AI hiring is increasingly visible across different sectors rather than being concentrated only among technology companies.
According to Owen, around 180,000 UK job postings required specialist AI skills in 2025, up 61% from the previous year.
He said:
This growth isn't coming exclusively from people building AI systems, though. That shift is happening across industries, not just in tech.
Financial services and the public sector are among the areas bringing AI specialists into their workforces, reflecting the wider adoption of AI across organisations.
This matters for cities and regional labour markets because AI hiring increasingly affects more than established technology hubs.
As businesses in finance, professional services, healthcare, government and other sectors build AI capabilities, demand for these skills can spread across a wider range of local economies.
AI skills are becoming a broader labour-market advantage
The findings also highlight a growing premium attached to AI expertise.
Owen cited reports suggesting workers with specialist AI capabilities are already earning around 34% more than workers without those skills.
That does not mean every worker needs to become an AI engineer. However, the data suggests that technical and strategic AI skills are increasingly valuable across the employment market.
Roles such as AI Consultant and AI Transformation Specialist show that companies are also hiring professionals who can translate AI capability into organisational change, not only those building the underlying models.
Meanwhile, AI Red Teamers reflect growing demand for specialists who can test AI systems for vulnerabilities, misuse and security weaknesses.
What the rankings mean for the UK workforce
The study illustrates how quickly the structure of the AI employment market is evolving.
Only a few years ago, much of the demand centred on data scientists, machine-learning engineers and research roles. The current list includes agent engineers, platform engineers, red teamers, transformation specialists and architects.
That diversification suggests AI is moving from a specialised research field into broader enterprise infrastructure.
For workers, the strongest career opportunities may increasingly sit at the intersection of AI expertise and another discipline, whether software engineering, cybersecurity, business strategy or public services.
For cities and regional governments, that shift also increases the importance of skills programmes, universities and technical training pipelines capable of matching local workers with emerging AI roles.
