The global sports wearables market hits $6.4 billion by 2032. These are the brands leading it, and the ones coming for them. 

 

Over 4,500 professional sports teams use wearable technology as a routine part of their operation. GPS vests, biometric patches, recovery rings. What once looked like a niche science project is now part of how clubs prepare, compete, and protect their athletes. But as the market grows and the hardware gets smaller and smarter, not every company is keeping pace.

It didn't happen by accident. A handful of campaigns shifted what people believed was possible. Catapult's early positioning treated wearable data as a competitive secret, marketed almost exclusively to performance scientists. Garmin's Beat Yesterday campaign did the opposite, handing a number to the amateur athlete and telling them to chase it. WHOOP built its identity around a single contrarian idea: no screen, no steps, just recovery. Each approach was different. Each one moved the market forward.

The result is an industry where hardware is largely commoditised and the real fight is happening one layer above it, in the algorithms, the dashboards, and the intelligence that turns raw data into decisions coaches and medical staff can actually use.

Top Sports Wearable Brands

Catapult

 

The closest thing this market has to a default choice for professional teams. Its Vector T7 device, launched in early 2024, captures over 1,000 data points per second through a combination of GPS and inertial sensors, and is now used by over 60% of professional football clubs globally. The company also signed agreements in October 2024 with England's Rugby Football Union and Premiership Rugby, making it the preferred tracking provider across an entire national sport structure in a single deal. That kind of institutional reach takes years to build.

 

STATSports

 

Strong adoption at both club and international level in football, including use by Premier League squads and national federations. Its Apex series tracks sprint distance, acceleration load, and heart rate variability in real time. What has helped it earn loyalty is the design of its analytics platform, built around the needs of performance scientists rather than data specialists. Practical usability, in a market where staff don't always have technical backgrounds, still counts for a lot.

 

Garmin

 

Sits in an interesting position. Its Forerunner and Fenix ranges are well-known among amateur and recreational athletes, but the company has been moving steadily toward the professional team market. In February 2025, it acquired Kinexon's sports analytics division for $85 million, combining its existing wearable hardware with indoor positioning technology. That move opens up sports like basketball and handball, where GPS-based systems have historically struggled to deliver accuracy inside covered arenas.

 

Zebra Technologies

 

Does not sell to the general public. Its MotionWorks system is the tracking backbone of the NFL, providing the real-time positional data that feeds directly into the league's Next Gen Stats platform. It is a reminder that some of the most important players in this space are not chasing consumer visibility. They are embedded so deeply in league infrastructure that they become part of the product.

The Ones to Watch

WHOOP

 

Built its identity around recovery monitoring, and it has done it well enough to attract serious interest from professional sports organisations. The device has no screen, no step counter, just biometric data focused on sleep, strain, and readiness. Its subscription model has proven resilient, and the brand has expanded its presence in team sports well beyond its original consumer base.

 

Oura Ring

 

Has become a reference point for passive biometric tracking, with skin temperature sensing now feeding into recovery models used by elite athletes. In December 2024, the company raised $200 million in a Series D round with the stated goal of expanding its textile-sensor research and growing its team sports division. It started in consumer wellness and is now being pulled into professional performance by demand.

What the Future of Sports Wearables might look like

 

The companies above are not just selling hardware. They are selling data pipelines, analytics platforms, and in some cases entire monitoring ecosystems. The market has moved past the point where a GPS chip in a vest counts as a differentiator. What separates brands now is the quality of the intelligence layer sitting on top of that data: the accuracy of fatigue models, the reliability of injury prediction algorithms, and the usability of the interfaces coaches and medical staff actually interact with day to day.

 

Roughly 27% of new wearable devices now incorporate AI-based fatigue detection. More than 80% of elite sports organisations use cloud-based dashboards to analyse tracking data in near real time. These are not experimental figures. They describe how the market already operates.

And yet, for all the apparent stability at the top of the table, this is still a market that surprises. The emergence of smart apparel, with companies embedding strain gauges directly into garments rather than relying on separate worn devices, is already changing what tracking looks like. Cornell University's SeamFit research showed what integrated textile sensors can do at the muscle-group level. Shipments of apparel-integrated sensor units grew by 21% in 2024 alone.

 

The brands that look dominant today have earned their position. But the technology keeps moving, and with it, the conditions that made those positions possible. New actors have entered this market before and changed it. There is no reason to assume that stops now.
