What Types of Businesses Benefit from Accepting Crypto Payments?

27 Mar 2025, 3:37 am GMT

The increasing popularity of digital currencies has led to many businesses considering whether they should accept these tokens as standard payment methods. While virtually any type of company can accept cryptocurrencies if they want to, there are a few industries for whom this payment method has become particularly attractive.

Tech-Based Sites Still Lead the Way

It was no surprise when many of the first sites to accept Bitcoin were for technology companies like Microsoft and GameStop. Back then, the use of cryptocurrencies was largely limited to the tech-savvy population who had discovered the concept of decentralized currencies and were comfortable with the idea of opening a wallet to move money around digitally.

In addition to the aforementioned, online PC parts vendor Newegg, cloud storage service Mega.nz and finance tech company PayPal were some of the first companies to launch BTC compatibility ten years ago, all sites innately tech-heavy in concept, but paving the way for broader adoption.

In recent years, it’s become a lot easier for anyone to use cryptocurrencies, as exchange platforms like Robinhood and Coinbase have lowered the entry barriers for people who aren't so tech-savvy. Despite this change, it’s still regarded as being more popular among the real enthusiasts of emerging technology.

Casinos Benefit from the Speed and Security

The high level of security, fast transaction speeds, and low fees are among the reasons why some online casinos, like PeerGame, choose to accept digital currencies, such as Bitcoin SV (BSV). Thanks to the secure high-speed network that sets Bitcoin SV (BSV) apart from the original BTC and other hard forks.

Players get an additional level of assurance as they can link a secure, pseudo-anonymous wallet to their casino account rather than using their main bank account or card.

Travel and Ground-Breakers in Other Industries

The travel industry has long been one of the leaders in terms of accepting BTC and other cryptos. Binance points out that Norwegian Air, Travala, and CheapAir are among the companies in this area that let you pay using digital money. On the BitPay site, Airbnb, airBaltic, and Delta are all listed as having the option of crypto payments. Virgin Voyages confirmed last year that travelers can now pay for their annual cruise pass using BTC. The convenience of being able to pay anywhere in the world without having to convert to the local currency is probably the main reason it's a popular choice for tech-savvy globe-trotters.

BTC has been around since 2009, but it can still be difficult to find places that accept this or other cryptocurrencies. This is why deciding to accept tokens can be a clever move that grabs some headlines and makes the business look like a ground-breaker. Tesla stopped accepting BTC over environmental concerns but has gained a lot of free publicity since by accepting the internet-famous Dogecoin (DOGE) as a payment method instead. At the same time, some sports teams have caught the eye by allowing fans to buy tickets with cryptocurrencies.

Accepting crypto payments might not seem like an obvious decision in some industries. However, the positive publicity it generates could make it worthwhile even if it doesn’t lead to a flood of customers looking to pay directly from their digital wallets.
