Why Won’t Your Jacuzzi Start? Easy Fixes to Try

You’re ready for a nice soak in your warm, bubbly Jacuzzi. You press the button… and nothing happens? Or maybe you hear a little hum but no jets?

Don’t worry! Many times, a Jacuzzi that won’t start can be fixed with a few simple steps. Let’s look at why your Jacuzzi motor might not be working — and what you can do to fix it.

What Does the Jacuzzi Motor Do?

The motor is the heart of your hot tub. It moves water through the heater and out the jets. No motor = no bubbles, no heat, no fun.

So when it stops working, it’s a big deal. But good news! It’s often not broken — just something small stopping it.

1. Check the Power (Most Common Fix!)

Sometimes, the motor isn’t broken — it just loses power.

What to Do:

  • Go to the breaker panel in your house. Look for the switch labeled "Hot Tub" or “Spa.”
  • If it’s off or in the middle, flip it all the way off, then back on.
  • Try your Jacuzzi again.

Also, check if your Jacuzzi is plugged into a GFCI outlet (the kind with test and reset buttons).

  • If yes, press the reset button. If it clicks, try your Jacuzzi.

2. Check the Water Level

If your water is too low, the motor can’t pull enough water and may shut off to protect itself.

What to Do:

  • Look at the water line. It should be above the highest jets.
  • If it’s low, add water using a garden hose.
  • Wait a few minutes, then try again.

3. Clean the Filters (Dirty Filters = Trouble)

Dirty filters block water flow. That can stop the motor or make it overheat.

What to Do:

  • Turn off the power first.
  • Take out the filters and rinse them with a hose.
  • If they’re still dirty, you may need a filter cleaner or new filters.
  • Put clean filters back in and try again.

4. Air Lock in the Pipes

Sometimes air gets trapped in the pipes, stopping the water from flowing. This is called an air lock.

What to Do:

  • Keep the power on.
  • Find the big plastic rings (called union nuts) near the pump.
  • Loosen one a little bit until you hear air hissing out. When water starts dripping, tighten it back quickly.
  • Try starting the Jacuzzi again.

If you’re unsure, it’s okay to ask a pro for help.

5. Overheated Motor

Motors can get too hot and stop to protect themselves.

What to Do:

  • Turn off the Jacuzzi at the breaker.
  • Wait 30 minutes to 1 hour for it to cool.
  • Check the filters and water level.
  • When it’s cool, turn it back on and try again.

6. Something Stuck Inside the Pump

Inside the motor is a part called the impeller. It spins to move water. If something gets stuck in there (like leaves or hair), it won’t spin.

What to Do:

This fix is best left to a Jacuzzi repair professional. It means opening up the pump, which can be tricky.

When to Call a Jacuzzi Repair Expert

If you tried all the steps and it still doesn’t work — or you see sparks, smoke, or scary noises — stop right away.

Call a pro if:

  • The motor still hums but doesn’t start.
  • You see or smell smoke.
  • You don’t feel safe working with electrical parts.
  • You think the motor capacitor or bearings might be broken.
  • You need a motor replacement.

Final Tip: Keep It Clean to Keep It Running

To stop future problems:

  • Clean your filters every 1–2 weeks.
  • Change water every 3–4 months.
  • Watch water levels and clean out any debris.

Your Jacuzzi should be relaxing — not stressful! With these easy steps, you can often fix small issues yourself and keep your motor running smoothly.
