History
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was founded in 1963 and is a forward-looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. CUHK teachers and students hail from all around the world, and CUHK graduates are connected worldwide through an extensive alumni network.
History:
In 1949, New Asia College was founded, followed by Chung Chi College in 1951 and United College in 1956. In 1962, the Fulton Commission was established to study the development needs of higher education in Hong Kong, which led to the formation of CUHK in 1963 when the three colleges were amalgamated. The Honourable Sir Cho-yiu Kwan was appointed as the first Chairman of the University Council, and the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Social Science were established.
In 1964, the first Vice-Chancellor was installed, and the first Bachelor's Degrees were awarded. In 1965, the first student exchange program was launched, and the School of Education was established (upgraded to Faculty of Education in 1991). The Department of Extramural Studies was also established in 1965 (renamed School of Continuing Studies in 1994 and School of Continuing and Professional Studies in 2006).
In 1966, the Graduate School was set up, being the first in Hong Kong, and the Institute of Chinese Studies was established. The first Master's Degrees were awarded in the same year. In 1969, the Central Office moved to the campus in Shatin, and in 1971, Sir Yuet-keung Kan was appointed as the Council Chairman, and the University Student Union was inaugurated. In 1972, the University Library was opened, and in 1972-73, United College and New Asia College moved to the campus in Shatin. In 1974, the Faculty of Business Administration was established.
In 1976, the report of the Second Fulton Commission was completed, which emphasized academic participation in the governance of the University and the integration of academic departments. In 1978, the first Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Choh-ming Li, retired, and Professor Ma Lin was appointed as the second Vice-Chancellor. In 1980, the first PhD program was launched. In 1981, the Faculty of Medicine was established, and undergraduate Part-time Degree Programs were introduced. In 1982, Sir Quo-wei Lee was appointed as the Council Chairman, and the first Doctor of Philosophy Degree was conferred.
In 1986, the undergraduate curriculum was restructured on a credit-unit system, and general education was further strengthened. Shaw College was also founded in the same year. In 1987, Professor Ma Lin retired, and Professor Charles K. Kao was appointed as the third Vice-Chancellor. In 1988, the Universities Service Centre amalgamated with CUHK (renamed Universities Service Centre for China Studies in 1993). In 1989, the Senate endorsed the adoption of a flexible credit unit system for undergraduate studies with effect from September 1991.
In 1991, the Faculty of Engineering was established, and the Department of Nursing was established (renamed Nethersole School of Nursing in 2002). In 1992, the School of Pharmacy was established, and in 1993, the School of Accountancy was established, and CUHK Convocation was established. In 1995, HKIX was set up at CUHK to provide an interconnection point for local internet traffic.
During the 1990s, CUHK continued to expand, with the establishment of the School of Continuing Studies, the School of Public Health, and the Institute of Chinese Studies. In 1999, the University launched the Center for East Asian Studies, which would later become the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies.
In the early 2000s, CUHK continued to grow, with the establishment of the Graduate School, the Center for Entrepreneurship, and the Center for Financial Engineering. The University also established the Institute of Environment, Energy, and Sustainability in 2005.
In 2010, CUHK celebrated its 50th anniversary, and continued to expand with the establishment of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, the School of Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Journalism and Communication. In recent years, the University has continued to expand and modernize its facilities, with the opening of the Lee Shau Kee Business Building in 2013, the CUHK Medical Center in 2013, and the CUHK-Shenzhen Research Institute in 2014.
