History
Aon is a professional services firm with roots dating back to 1919, when it was founded by Cornelius Vander Starr as an insurance agency in Chicago. The company has grown to become the largest provider of risk management, insurance, and reinsurance brokerage services in the world. In 2012, Aon was ranked by Fortune magazine as the #75 largest corporation in the United States and the 6th largest professional services firm in the world. During the 1980s and 1990s, Aon grew rapidly and expanded its range of services, including business consulting and outsourcing, human capital and benefits, health care and pensions administration, and outsourcing. Aon also invested in technology and acquired multiple companies with complementary offerings. In 1997, Aon expanded internationally with the purchase of Alexander & Alexander, creating Aon Risk Services. Aon acquired and created a number of other companies and subsidiaries, including Hewitt Associates, a global consulting and outsourcing business, and Aon Benfield, a reinsurance intermediary. In 2007, Aon was awarded an $850 million contract from the US Department of Defense to develop, manage and maintain military personnel benefits. The deal was the largest contract ever awarded to an insurance broker in history at the time. Today, Aon is a leading provider of risk management, insurance, and reinsurance brokerage services, with a global presence across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. In addition to these broker services, Aon provides a wide range of consulting, HR and technology solutions to help companies better manage and develop their employees.
