History

Accor is a global hospitality company that has a rich and diverse history dating back to 1967. Here is a chronological overview of its development:

1967-1983: Accor was founded in 1967 by Paul Dubrule and Gérard Pélisson in France. The company initially focused on operating and managing budget hotels. The first Novotel hotel opened in Lille, France, in 1967, followed by the opening of the first Mercure hotel in 1973. Accor expanded its portfolio rapidly, both through organic growth and acquisitions, establishing a presence in Europe and beyond.

1984-2000: Accor began its international expansion in the 1980s, opening hotels in the United States, South America, and Asia. In 1985, the company acquired the iconic luxury hotel brand, Sofitel. Accor's hotel brands continued to grow, with the introduction of Suitehotel in 1989 and Ibis Styles (formerly All Seasons) in 1999. The company diversified its business by acquiring the car rental company, Europcar, in 1992. Accor also entered the fast-food industry by acquiring the restaurant chain, Courtepaille, and later launching the successful brands, Quick and Flunch.

2001-2010: Accor underwent a significant restructuring in the early 2000s, divesting non-core businesses and focusing on its core hospitality operations. The company sold off its stake in Europcar and exited the fast-food sector. Accor introduced new brands, including Adagio, a serviced apartment concept, and Pullman, a premium hotel brand. In 2006, the company launched the economy hotel brand, Ibis Budget (formerly Etap Hotel). Accor further expanded its portfolio through acquisitions, such as the purchase of luxury hotel brands, including Swissôtel, Raffles, and Fairmont, in 2006. This acquisition significantly strengthened Accor's presence in the luxury segment.

2011-2018: Accor underwent a transformation during this period, focusing on becoming a global leader in the hospitality industry. In 2013, the company announced its new strategic vision, "AccorHotels," which aimed to position Accor as a fully integrated hospitality group offering a broad range of services beyond traditional hotel operations. The company expanded into new sectors, including concierge services, private luxury residences, and digital hospitality platforms. Accor acquired companies such as onefinestay, a high-end vacation rental platform, and John Paul, a global concierge service provider. The company also invested in technology, launching the digital platform, AccorHotels.com, to enhance the customer experience and facilitate online bookings.

2019-Present: In 2019, Accor unveiled a new brand architecture and a new loyalty program called ALL - Accor Live Limitless. The program integrated various services, such as hotel stays, experiences, and partnerships, into a single platform. Accor continued its expansion through strategic acquisitions and partnerships. Notable acquisitions include the purchase of the luxury private rental brand, Onefinestay, and the acquisition of the lifestyle hotel group, sbe Entertainment. Accor also formed partnerships with companies like Air France-KLM and Huazhu Hotels Group to further expand its global presence.

Today, Accor is a leading hospitality company with a diverse portfolio of brands ranging from luxury to economy. It operates in more than 110 countries and employs thousands of people worldwide. Accor's focus on innovation, digitalization, and sustainability positions it as a major player in the evolving hospitality industry.
