History

Aegiq was founded in 2019 as a spin-out company from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. The origin of the company is directly linked to more than two decades of academic research in quantum photonics carried out at the university, particularly in the development of quantum dot single-photon sources. The founding researchers had created a method for generating identical photons on demand using compound semiconductor quantum dots, which solved a major technical problem in both quantum communications and photonic quantum computing. This research produced multiple peer-reviewed publications and patents and formed the core intellectual property on which Aegiq was built. The company was created to move this technology from laboratory research into commercial systems.

 

During its early years, Aegiq focused primarily on quantum communication. From 2019 to 2021, the company demonstrated its quantum dot photon sources in laboratory quantum key distribution systems, proving that its single-photon technology could operate within practical fibre-based communication networks. In mid-2025, Aegiq signed a partnership agreement with Pixel Photonics to integrate waveguide-based superconducting nanowire detectors into its photonic computing systems, improving detection efficiency and scalability.

It uses telecom-grade components and operates at telecom wavelengths, allowing it to connect naturally with existing fibre networks. This makes the system suitable for on-premises deployment in research facilities, secure government environments, and industrial data centres.

 

A key enabling technology in all Aegiq systems is its deterministic quantum light source platform. These single-photon and entangled-state sources are based on proprietary quantum dot technology developed at the University of Sheffield. They generate identical photons on demand at very high speeds, operating at gigahertz clock rates, and produce output directly into single-mode fibre in the telecom C-band. This allows high-fidelity quantum operations and forms the foundation of Aegiq’s quantum computing and quantum communication products.

 

Aegiq also delivers its Quantum Link Assurance System (QLAS), a deployable network security platform for optical fibre infrastructure. QLAS provides continuous real-time monitoring of fibre links and detects tampering, signal interference, and physical attacks on the network. It is designed to support the deployment of quantum key distribution and other secure communication systems by ensuring the integrity of fibre networks.
