History

Airtouch Communications Inc. was created in 1987 by mobile phone pioneer Craig O. McCaw. By 1992, it had become the largest cellular telephone service provider in the United States. In 1999, Airtouch was acquired by Vodafone and merged with the company’s existing US mobile service brand, Omnitel. In 2000, the combined company changed its name to Vodafone Airtouch.
