Alexandra Farrell was born in the UK and has been driven by a passion for technology and business since a young age. She pursued her education in law at the University of Plymouth, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree between 1992 and 1995. This legal background would later serve her well in the world of business and entrepreneurship.
In 1999, Alex ventured into the world of technology entrepreneurship by founding The IT Job Board, a platform aimed at providing the tech community with a space to find job opportunities. At the time, the internet was still in its early stages of commercialisation, and Alex saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the market for specialised job boards. Over the next decade, she successfully grew the business into Europe's largest tech careers platform. The company expanded its reach into the UK, Holland, Belgium, and Germany, with 65 staff working in offices across London, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt. The IT Job Board became the go-to platform for tech professionals looking for career opportunities in Europe.
The business flourished through a strategic focus on digital marketing, including SEO and email campaigns, and strong technical and product development management. The company’s rapid growth and success culminated in a successful sale to Dice Inc. in 2013, a NYSE-listed company. Alex completed an eighteen-month earn-out period with Dice Inc., ensuring a smooth transition for the management team and achieving all targets.
After the sale of The IT Job Board, Alex continued to grow her career in the recruitment and staffing industry. She joined the executive board of SThree Plc, a global FTSE250 staffing company. During her time at SThree, she was responsible for advising on marketing and online recruitment, bringing her expertise in technology and digital marketing to the company’s recruitment strategy.
In 2019, Alex founded Workfinder, a platform designed to address the skills crisis by helping young people aged 16-24 find meaningful work experience with ambitious growth companies across the UK. Workfinder allowed young people to apply for placements in local businesses, thereby transforming how work experience is developed and delivered. The platform aimed to tackle the widening skills gap in the workforce, especially among young talent, and was highly regarded for its innovative approach to recruitment.
In addition to her work with Workfinder, Alex served as a member of the UK Government Strategic Review of FinTech, contributing to the Kalifa Review of UK FinTech. Her involvement in this project focused on areas such as skills and talent, investment, policy and regulation, and boosting the UK’s global competitiveness in the fintech sector. This review sought to create highly skilled jobs and foster continued innovation in the UK’s fintech ecosystem.
In 2021, Alex took another significant step in her entrepreneurial journey by founding Autometry. The company focuses on revolutionising recruitment through the power of AI and data mapping. Autometry aims to optimise recruiter productivity by offering an intelligent AI assistant that integrates seamlessly into recruitment workflows, combining data, automation, and AI-driven insights. The company’s goal is to help recruitment leaders run, scale, and optimise their businesses through intelligent workflow design and full tech stack integration.
