Summary
NIFT alumnus Amit Aggarwal's design aesthetic — sculptural silhouettes and ingenious application of industrial materials — took shape at a young age as he observed his father working on engineering projects. The Indian fashion designer has always been greatly inspired by science, which is evident in his design ideology today. In his early career he worked with leading fashion houses following which he became the creative director of an independent venture that led to him receiving Debutant of the Year award by Vogue and Elle.
History
NIFT alumnus Amit Aggarwal's design aesthetic — sculptural silhouettes and ingenious application of industrial materials — took shape at a young age as he observed his father working on engineering projects. His experiences culminated into the creation of his eponymous label Amit Aggarwal in 2012.
Widely renowned for its craftsmanship-first approach, sourcing sustainable materials and shaping materials as disparate as polymers and liquid organza into fascinating fluid forms- Amit Aggarwal explores the relationship between science and design. Each ensemble in his latest collections is enhanced by sheer drapes and layers creating an illusion of metallic color through shadow play. Using hand techniques, his line features pieces that represent the metamorphosis of raw influences, both fantastical and mundane.
“Our brand has an established tradition of creating designs inspired by natural forms, articulating them through unique silhouettes. We believe in making clothing that is sculpted to enhance the elegant form of a body. Each ensemble is an amalgamation of femininity and structural movement. Our light-weight clothing with voluminous shapes and surface details is made with experimental textiles and techniques" per a note on his official website. "Both traditional and modern craftsmanship using recycled materials allows the wearer to effortlessly carry the grandeur of the garment… Our vision is met through innovative patterns combined with intricate fabrications."
In September 2011 the couturier showcased his line in Paris in collaboration with Aveda- for a hair and makeup trend show. His work was exhibited at the Arken Museum in Copenhagen showcasing the future of Art and Fashion from August 2012 until January 2013. And he was recently invited by TED in India for a talk on fashion- its future and his own journey.
Per Voice Of Fashion: "Amit Aggarwal is a name cut from polymer sheets, woven with rubber blends and moulded into architectural shapes. Aggarwal’s brand offers designs that fill up a still-niche market for textile and technique innovation. There are lehengas crafted from metallic polymer strips corded and stitched with hand-done embroideries. Delicate tulle and mesh reimagined in structured forms for belted gowns while knee-length dresses are finished with hand-painted details that imitate puddle pour art. His selection of menswear follows a similar design language."
Amit Aggarwal's recent collaboration with late Wendell Rodricks made headlines. Per Vogue: ‘Aggarwal for his part acknowledges that while his eponymous brand might project a kind of a scientific complexity… his motivations in life and on the runway have been rooted in simplicity. The world of Wendell Rodricks projects the same too.’

Products and Services
The lightweight clothing with voluminous shapes and surface details is handcrafted with experimental textiles and techniques. And both traditional and modern craftsmanship- using recycled materials- allows the wearer to carry the grandeur of the garment.
Amit Aggarwal's opening show at India Couture Week 2019 was the sharpest expression of his design aesthetic and a reminder that his strength is a grand, almost-theatrical design vocabulary. The weightless tulle lace and organzas were intricately hand embroidered and handcrafted into structural silhouettes, transforming the traditional idea of bridal couture with a modern progressive outlook, particularly the lehengas with sculpted Edwardian bustle and sarees with dramatic trails. The menswear was spanned classic Indian silhouettes handcrafted with Jacquards, silks and geometric woven textiles, enhanced with three-dimensional hand embroideries.
