History

Amphenol was founded in 1932 by Schmitt J. Arthur in Chicago, Illinois, with a focus on developing and manufacturing electrical connectors. The company quickly established itself as a leader in the field, and by the 1950s, had expanded its product line to include a wide range of connectors and interconnect systems.

In 1964, Arthur J. Schmitt, the founder of Amphenol, stepped down as CEO of the company but remained active in its operations for many years. Under his leadership, Amphenol grew rapidly, expanding its product offerings and global reach through a series of acquisitions and partnerships.

One of the company's key acquisitions came in 1966 when it purchased Tuchel-Kontakt GmbH, a leading German manufacturer of connectors and interconnect systems. This acquisition gave Amphenol a strong presence in Europe and helped to establish the company as a global leader in the industry.

In the decades that followed, Amphenol continued to grow and expand, entering new markets and developing new products and technologies. In 1981, the company that was the result of the merger between Focke-Wulf and Weserflug became part of the aviation group Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm (MBB), known today as Airbus.

In 1993, Amphenol founded Amphenol Fiber Systems International, a fiber optic company specializing in the fabrication and manufacturing of fiber optic connectivity products and systems.

In 2005, Amphenol made another significant acquisition, purchasing Teradyne Connection Systems for about $390 million in cash. This acquisition helped to further expand Amphenol's product line and global reach, and solidified the company's position as a leader in the industry.

In 2006, Amphenol launched its Cables on Demand division, which specializes in distributing standard cable assemblies via an e-commerce storefront.

In the years that followed, Amphenol continued to make strategic acquisitions and partnerships to expand its product offerings and global reach. In 2017, the company acquired Phitek Ltd, a New Zealand-based manufacturer of electronic noise-cancellation and audio enhancement devices for aircraft cabins.

Today, Amphenol is a global leader in the manufacture of electrical, electronic, and fiber optic connectors and interconnect systems.
