History

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham traces its humble beginnings to the year 1994 when the seeds of educational excellence were sown with the establishment of the Amrita School of Engineering in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Founded by the revered spiritual leader, Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, commonly known as Amma, the university embarked on a transformative journey aimed at providing a holistic education that harmonises spiritual values with academic pursuits.

In 1998, the university took a significant stride forward with the inauguration of the Amrita School of Medicine in Kochi, Kerala. This marked the expansion of its academic footprint into the realm of healthcare and medical sciences, laying the foundation for future growth and innovation in the field.

Recognition came swiftly as in 2003, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was accredited as a deemed university by the University Grants Commission (UGC), a testament to its commitment to academic excellence and research-driven education. This accreditation not only validated the university's academic credentials but also catalysed further expansion and recognition on the national and international stage.

Over the years, the university continued to expand its reach and influence, establishing campuses in strategic locations across India. From the bustling urban landscape of Bengaluru to the serene backwaters of Amritapuri, and from the cultural hub of Chennai to the historic city of Amaravati, each campus was meticulously crafted to foster a conducive environment for learning, innovation, and personal growth.

In 2016, the university marked a significant milestone with the establishment of a second medical school and a 2,000-bed hospital campus in Delhi, further cementing its commitment to healthcare education and research.

The year 2022 witnessed a momentous occasion with the inauguration of a medical school campus along with Amrita Hospital in Faridabad by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This underscored the university's role as a leader in medical education and healthcare delivery, with a focus on addressing the healthcare challenges facing the nation.

In 2024, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham propelled forward with its growth and expansion strategy by acquiring the Sun College of Engineering & Technology campus in Erachakulam, Nagercoil. This strategic move significantly strengthened the university's foothold in engineering education, extending its influence to new communities and regions.


 

Courses

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham provides a varied array of undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated-degree, dual-degree, and doctoral programmes across a spectrum of disciplines. The university's faculties cover fields such as engineering, medicine, business, sciences, performing arts, humanities, law, and more.

In the engineering domain, the university offers programmes including Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering. These programmes are available at campuses in Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Amritapuri, Chennai, and Amaravati.

Within the medical sphere, the university provides undergraduate offerings such as MBBS, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Postgraduate programmes include Master of Science and Diplomate of National Board (DNB), among others. The medical school campuses are situated in Kochi, Faridabad, and Delhi.
