Andhra University, established in 1926, is a prestigious public university located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It was founded under the Madras University Act with Sir C.R. Reddy as its first Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan as the second. The university's establishment was significantly supported by King Vikram Deo Verma of Jeypore, who provided substantial financial resources and land, ensuring its foundation in Visakhapatnam. 

Spanning a scenic 425-acre campus, Andhra University offers a harmonious blend of academic excellence and natural beauty, featuring 205 buildings, vast open spaces, and rich biodiversity, with Kailasa Hill as a backdrop and the Bay of Bengal in the front. The university has played a crucial role in India's educational and socio-economic development, producing notable alumni such as Nobel laureate Sir C.V. Raman and renowned statistician Prof. C.R. Rao.

The university comprises 58 departments and 16 specialised research centres, providing state-of-the-art facilities, including 188 ICT-enabled classrooms and 76 seminar halls. Andhra University has been recognised for its quality education and research, receiving an A++ grade from NAAC with a CGPA of 3.74. The institution is also one of the ten universities in India supported under the “Rashtriya Uchhatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA).”

In recent years, Andhra University has established various industry-sponsored research centres and skill development centres, such as the AU-RINL Medical Genetics Centre and the AU-Saint LUKES Dolby Atmos Studio. Aligning with the National Education Policy 2020, the university aims to produce socially relevant, industry-ready, and globally connected graduates.


 

History

Andhra University, situated in the city of Visakhapatnam in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, boasts a rich and illustrious history that dates back to the early 20th century. Established in 1926, during the British colonial era, Andhra University was a manifestation of the aspirations of the Telugu-speaking people of the region for higher education and intellectual enlightenment.

The foundation stone of the university was laid by Sir C.R. Reddy, the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras, on the 24th of April, 1926. Initially, the university operated from temporary premises in the present-day School of Arts building in Waltair, Visakhapatnam. The university was officially inaugurated on the 31st of October, 1926, by Lord Goschen, the then Chancellor of Madras University.

Under the visionary leadership of its founders, Andhra University swiftly evolved into a centre of academic excellence, attracting scholars, educators, and students from across the country. It pioneered the cause of higher education in the Telugu-speaking regions, offering courses in a wide array of disciplines ranging from arts and sciences to engineering and technology.

Despite these fluctuations, the university's overall placement scenario remained steady, with median packages for UG 3-year and PG 2-year programmes standing at INR 3.55 LPA and INR 6.62 LPA, respectively.
