Summary

Arista Networks is a computer networking firm delivering cloud networking solutions for large data center and computer environments. Arista Networks is a computer networking firm delivering cloud networking solutions for large data center and computer environments. It was founded to deliver software-driven cloud networking solutions for large data center and high-performance computing environments.

With more than three million cloud networking ports being deployed worldwide, Arista delivers a portfolio of 1/10/40 and 100 GbE products that redefine network architectures, bring extensibility to networking, and dramatically change the price/performance of data center networks.

History

2004: According to the book Cloud Networking Transformation: The Making of Arista, Google (today a part of Alphabet (GOOG -0.13%) (GOOGL -0.14%)) put out a request for information in 2004. Andy Bechtolsheim, David Cheriton, and Kenneth Duda co-founded Arista Networks in 2004. They successfully developed a product line for the Cisco company called Catalyst and decided to establish their own company in 2004 which is currently known as Arista Networks.

2008: Ullal was a former protege of Chambers' at Cisco, overseeing major business units before being tapped in 2008 to lead Arista. In 2008, the first product was created, and the business was ready to go to market.

2010: Arista launched its first switch product in 2010, and that device offered six times the throughput of anything else on the market then.

2014: Until Arista started to steal more of the spotlight (it went public in 2014 at $43/share), the networking industry was stale and steady, churning out predictable, barely-refreshed products like routers and network switches. From 2014, there have been several differences followed by filing lawsuits between Cisco and Arista and the latter agreed to $400 million as a part of the settlement.

2016: The transition from the current standard 100G ethernet switches (developed around 2016) to 400G, which is still in its infancy.

2017: In the first half of 2017, Arista's earnings grew nearly 2.5x over 1H16.

2019: One very large customer (presumably Microsoft) paused its spending with Arista toward the end of the first quarter of 2019, but that customer has since resumed spending with Arista. In the third quarter of 2019, only about 20% of sales came from outside of the Americas.

2020: Arista was recognized as a leader with the top score in current offering and strategy categories in The Forrester Wave™: Open, Programmable Switches For A Businesswide SDN, Q3 2020. To bolster its deep and real-time monitoring and visibility capabilities, Arista acquired Big Switch Networks earlier in 2020. In fact, Jayshree Ullal said a mid-single-digit top-line growth figure for 2020 is not out of the question.
