Hayes began his professional journey in the financial sector, working as an Associate and Synthetic Equity Trader at Deutsche Bank from 2008 to 2011. During his time at Deutsche Bank, he served as a Market Maker for the bank's Asian ETFs, gaining valuable experience in the trading of financial derivatives.

In 2011, Hayes joined Citigroup as a Delta One Trader (Associate), where he assumed the role of Head Trader for Citi's Asian ETF offerings. In addition to ETF trading, he also specialized in Index Forwards, Index Swaps, and Custom Baskets.
