Bangalore University, established in 1964, is one of the largest public state universities in India, located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. In 2024, the Karnataka government announced plans to establish a research and study centre at Bangalore University dedicated to the contributions of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, focusing on his transformative economic reforms and their impact on India's growth

The university has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A++ grade and a CGPA of 3.75, which marks a significant achievement in its history. This recognition highlights the institution’s commitment to providing quality education and continuously improving its academic offerings. Bangalore University, located in the vibrant city of Bengaluru, was established in July 1964 as an offshoot of the University of Mysore. The university's primary aim was to address the growing demand for higher education in the region, particularly in the metropolitan city of Bangalore and the surrounding districts of Kolar and Tumkur. At its inception, the two premier institutions, Central College and University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), formed the nucleus of Bangalore University.
 

In 1965, the university introduced Honours Courses as part of its reorganisation of academic offerings. Initially, these courses were available in disciplines such as Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics, and Zoology, attracting many brilliant students. These students were given priority admission to Post Graduate Courses, establishing a pipeline for academic growth. Over the years, the university expanded, incorporating numerous affiliated colleges and postgraduate centres, solidifying its position as one of the largest universities in Asia. 

In 1973, the university moved to its current sprawling campus, 'Jnana Bharathi,' which is spread across 1,100 acres of land. This campus now houses various postgraduate departments, administrative offices, and academic centres, including the University Law College and the College of Physical Education, which were established much earlier.
 

Bangalore University has made significant strides in academic excellence, receiving national recognition over the years. The university was first accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2002, achieving a Five Star status, and was re-accredited in 2008 and 2016 with an 'A' grade. It has also garnered international recognition, securing a ranking of 151st among BRICS nations in 2016. In 2025, Bangalore University ranked between 701-750 in the QS World University Rankings and was also ranked #187 in the Asian University Rankings. Today, the university is home to 48 postgraduate departments, one postgraduate centre at Kolar, and 684 affiliated colleges. According to the NIRF 2025 report, during the 2023 placement season, a total of 1,429 postgraduate (PG) students secured placements, alongside 317 undergraduate (UG) students from four-year programmes and 52 from five-year programmes. The median salary offered to UG four-year students was ?6.50 lakh per annum, while UG five-year students received ?7.45 lakh per annum. For PG two-year courses, the median package stood at ?3.50 lakh per annum.
