History
Bangalore University, located in the vibrant city of Bengaluru, was established in July 1964 as an offshoot of the University of Mysore. The university's primary aim was to address the growing demand for higher education in the region, particularly in the metropolitan city of Bangalore and the surrounding districts of Kolar and Tumkur. At its inception, the two premier institutions, Central College and University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), formed the nucleus of Bangalore University.
In 1965, the university introduced Honours Courses as part of its reorganisation of academic offerings. Initially, these courses were available in disciplines such as Botany, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geology, Kannada, Mathematics, and Zoology, attracting many brilliant students. These students were given priority admission to Post Graduate Courses, establishing a pipeline for academic growth. Over the years, the university expanded, incorporating numerous affiliated colleges and postgraduate centres, solidifying its position as one of the largest universities in Asia.
In 1973, the university moved to its current sprawling campus, 'Jnana Bharathi,' which is spread across 1,100 acres of land. This campus now houses various postgraduate departments, administrative offices, and academic centres, including the University Law College and the College of Physical Education, which were established much earlier.
Bangalore University has made significant strides in academic excellence, receiving national recognition over the years.
