Bar Harbor Bankshares was formed in 1997 as the holding company for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust was founded in 1914 as the First National Bank of Bar Harbor, Maine, making it the oldest full-service community bank in Eastern Maine. In 2000, the company expanded its service area with the acquisition of Downeast Financial Services. In May 2006, Bar Harbor Bankshares opened its first branch office in Farmington, Maine. Later that year, Bar Harbor Bankshares purchased National Maine Bank, increasing the number of bank offices to 13.
