History
Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER), also known informally as Bharath University, is a prominent private deemed university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The institution has a rich history that dates back to its foundation in 1984 by Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan, an esteemed educationist and visionary. Established under the Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust, the institution initially began as the Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
BIST was among the first autonomous engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, offering undergraduate programmes in engineering. Initially affiliated with Madras University, it later came under the affiliation of Anna University. The institution's commitment to academic excellence and innovation in technical education quickly established it as a significant player in the region's educational landscape.
In 2002, in recognition of its academic achievements and potential, the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted BIST the status of a deemed university. This milestone led to its rebranding as Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER), marking a significant expansion in its academic offerings. Beyond engineering, BIHER began offering programmes in medicine, dental science, nursing, law, management, arts, and sciences, reflecting its evolution into a multidisciplinary institution.
In September 2006, following a decree by the UGC that allowed deemed universities to use the term "university" in their names, BIHER was renamed Bharath University. However, a directive from the UGC and a subsequent Supreme Court order in November 2017 required all deemed universities to remove "university" from their names, leading to the institution's reversion to Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research.
Over the years, BIHER has expanded significantly, establishing multiple campuses across Tamil Nadu, including in Chennai, Trichy, and Puducherry. The campuses collectively cover around 305 acres and feature state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced laboratories and research centres. The institution places a strong emphasis on research and development, fostering a culture of innovation and academic inquiry.
BIHER has also forged numerous collaborations with international universities and research institutions, enhancing its academic and research capabilities. These partnerships have facilitated student and faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and the sharing of knowledge and resources on a global scale.
Accredited with an 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), BIHER continues to uphold its motto of "Win the world by innovation" and "To the stars by hard work." The institution remains dedicated to providing quality education and fostering an environment that encourages innovation and excellence.
