History
The history of BMW dates back to the early 20th century, when the brand was initially established in 1916 as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG. BMW was initially a German aircraft engine manufacturer that primarily manufactured engines for military aircraft. The first production BMW car, the Dixi, was developed in 1929, and the company was quickly establishing itself as a leader in innovation and design in the auto industry. During World War II, BMW primarily switched to manufacturing engines for military vehicles and was relegated to a subsidiary of the German government. After the war, BMW was able to reestablish its identity as a luxury vehicle brand and continued to innovate in the auto industry with their motorcycles and cars. In the 1980s, BMW released its iconic 3-Series, which established the company as a pioneer of sporty luxury cars. The 3-Series was later followed by the 5- and 7-Series, which only continued to grow BMW's presence in the luxury vehicle segment. The 2000s marked the dawn of BMW’s “M” cars, powerful and capable vehicles that combine the luxury of BMW with the performance of a race car. Today, BMW continues to be a leader of design and innovation in the auto industry. From the 3-Series to the M cars, BMW has a wide range of vehicles to fit any lifestyle. The company continues to expand their lineup of electric and self-driving vehicles as well as continued improvements to their existing cars.
