Boston Scientific Corporation develops, manufactures, and markets medical devices for use in various interventional medical specialties worldwide. It operates through three segments: MedSurg, Rhythm and Neuro, and Cardiovascular. The company offers devices to diagnose and treat gastrointestinal and pulmonary conditions; devices to treat various urological and pelvic conditions; implantable cardioverter and implantable cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators; pacemakers and implantable cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers; and remote patient management systems. It also provides medical technologies to diagnose and treat rate and rhythm disorders of the heart comprising 3-D cardiac mapping and navigation solutions, ablation catheters, diagnostic catheters, mapping catheters, intracardiac ultrasound catheters, delivery sheaths, and other accessories; spinal cord stimulator systems for the management of chronic pain; indirect decompression systems; and deep brain stimulation systems. In addition, the company offers interventional cardiology products, including drug-eluting coronary stent systems used in the treatment of coronary artery disease; percutaneous coronary interventions products to treat atherosclerosis; intravascular catheter-directed ultrasound imaging catheters, fractional flow reserve devices, and systems for use in coronary arteries and heart chambers, as well as various peripheral vessels; and structural heart therapies. Further, it provides stents, balloon catheters, wires, and atherectomy systems to treat arterial diseases; thrombectomy and acoustic pulse thrombolysis systems, wires, and stents to treat venous diseases; and peripheral embolization devices, radioactive microspheres, ablation systems, cryotherapy ablation systems, and micro and drainage catheters to treat cancer. The company was incorporated in 1979 and is headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

History

Boston Scientific was founded in 1979 by John Abele and Pete Nicholas in Natick, Massachusetts. 1981 - Boston Scientific developed its first medical device, a guide wire used in balloon angioplasty. 1986 - Boston Scientific began to focus its research on minimally invasive medical device development. 1992 - The company acquired Vertetech, a medical device producer specializing in embolic protection for cardiac and neurovascular applications. 1995 - The company merged with Medi-Tech International and changed its name to Boston Scientific Medi-Tech. 1996 - The company went public and was listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. 1997 - Boston Scientific Medi-Tech introduced its first stent, the NIR Stent. 1998 - The company acquired Scimed Life Systems, Inc., which expanded its offerings in the field of interventional cardiology. 1999 - Boston Scientific acquired Schneider Worldwide, a leader in the development of next-generation endoscopic technologies. 2000 - The company acquired the Assets of Guided Therapeutics, Inc., expanding its product offerings in the growing interventional pulmonology market. 2003 - Boston Scientific acquired Diagnostic Instruments, Inc., a leading manufacturer of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) systems. 2005 - The company acquired Guidant Corporation, a leading producer of cardiac rhythm management and vascular interventions products. 2007 - The company acquired CryoVascular Systems Corporation, a developer of medical devices for minimally invasive aortic repair. 2010 - Boston Scientific acquired Mast Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel treatments for sickle cell disease. 2011 - The company acquired NxThera, Inc., a developer of minimally invasive thermal ablation systems. 2014 - Boston Scientific acquired Augmenix, Inc., a manufacturer of absorbable hydrogel spacers used in radiation therapy. 2015 - The company acquired EndoChoice Holdings, Inc., a manufacturer of high-end endoscopy products. 2018 - Boston Scientific agreed to acquire certain operations of Symetis, an interventional cardiology company. 2019 - The company acquired Claret Medical, a developer of Neurovascular Embolic Protection devices. 2020 - Boston Scientific announced the acquisition of privately held Vertiflex, makers of Superion spacer system for lumbar spinal stenosis.
