Butterfly Network was founded in 2011 by Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, a professor of electrical engineering and physics at Yale University. He invented a new type of imaging technology called mass-transit ion mobility spectrometry (MTIMS) that can be used to create 3D images of organs and tissue. Rothberg joined forces with engineers, clinicians, and data scientists to develop Butterfly Network's handheld ultrasound device, the Butterfly iQ, which was released in 2017.
