Summary

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. provides software, hardware, services, and reusable integrated circuit (IC) design blocks worldwide.

The company offers functional verification services, including emulation and prototyping hardware. Its functional verification offering consists of JasperGold, a formal verification platform; Xcelium, a parallel logic simulation platform; Palladium, an enterprise emulation platform; and Protium, a prototyping platform for chip verification.

The company also provides digital IC design and sign-off products, including Genus logic synthesis and Joules RTL power solutions, as well as Modus software solutions to reduce systems-on-chip design-for-test time; physical implementation tools, such as place and route, optimization, and multiple patterning preparations; and Innovus implementation system, a physical implementation system.

In addition, it offers custom IC design and simulation products to create schematic and physical representations of circuits down to the transistor level for analog, mixed-signal, custom digital, memory, and radio frequency designs; and system design and analysis products to develop printed circuit boards and IC packages, as well as to analyze electromagnetic, electro-thermal, and other multi-physics effects.

Further, the company provides intellectual property (IP) products comprising pre-verified and customizable functional blocks to integrate into customers' ICs; and verification IP with memory models to emulate and model the expected behaviour and interaction of standard industry system interface protocols.

Additionally, it offers services related to methodology, education, and hosted design solutions, as well as technical support and maintenance services. The company serves 5G communications, aerospace and defence, automotive, industrial and healthcare, mobile, consumer, and hyper-scale computing markets.

Cadence Design Systems, Inc. was incorporated in 1988 and is headquartered in San Jose, California.

History

Cadence Design Systems was founded in 1988 by the merger of two Silicon Valley-based companies, SDA Systems and ECAD, Inc. The company was created as a result of the growing need for software that could help design and simulate semiconductor chips. Cadence quickly established itself as a leader in the industry, offering a wide range of products and services for electronic design automation (EDA). Cadence’s first products were circuit-level simulators and logic synthesis tools. Over the years, the company has expanded its product portfolio to include a variety of products and services such as system-level design and verification, integrated circuit (IC) design, and system-on-chip (SoC) design.

In 1994, Cadence acquired Valid Logic Systems, Inc., a leading provider of EDA software and services, which was used to improve the accuracy of Cadence’s products. In 1997, Cadence launched its first commercial-level IC design products, which included the Design Compiler, Encounter, and Virtuoso platforms.

The Xcelium Parallel Simulator is based on the Xcelium Simulation Platform, which Cadence acquired from Mentor Graphics in 2017. Cadence also announced the launch of its new AI-driven design platform, the Cadence Intelligent System Design Platform. This platform combines design automation with machine learning technology to enable faster and more accurate design and verification of chips.

In 2018, Cadence acquired the Verisity Design, Inc. business from Synopsys, Inc., which included verification and software development tools. This acquisition strengthened Cadence’s product portfolio and allowed the company to offer a comprehensive suite of EDA solutions.

In 2019, Cadence announced the acquisition of AWR Corporation, a provider of high-frequency design and simulation software. This acquisition expanded Cadence’s portfolio of high-frequency simulation and design tools and allowed the company to offer a comprehensive suite of solutions for 5G, radar, and communication systems. The same year, Cadence unveiled its latest product, the Xcelium Parallel Simulator, which is designed to accelerate simulation times for large and complex designs.

In 2020, Cadence announced the acquisition of Forte Design Systems, a provider of hardware design and verification software and services. This acquisition further strengthened Cadence’s portfolio of EDA solutions and allowed the company to offer a comprehensive suite of tools for system-on-chip (SOC) design, verification, and implementation.

Today, Cadence is one of the leading providers of EDA software and services, with customers in a wide range of industries including automotive, consumer electronics, medical and aerospace. The company continues to improve its products and services and focuses on helping customers accelerate their time-to-market and reduce their development costs.
