CAPREIT was founded in 1997 by Michael Stein, a Canadian real estate entrepreneur. Stein formed CAPREIT to acquire RoyalTrust REIT (now part of Bentall Kennedy), which owned more than 6,000 apartments. CAPREIT has since grown to become one of Canada's largest landlords, with more than 40,000 units under management.
