History

1918 - The Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is incorporated by the Canadian government to consolidate several existing railway companies into a single national system.

1922 - CN takes over operations of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway, expanding its network across Canada.

1938 - CN begins operating the Super Continental, a transcontinental passenger train service that runs between Montreal and Vancouver.

1949 - CN completes construction of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

1956 - CN introduces the Turbo Train, a high-speed passenger train that runs between Montreal and Toronto.

1960 - CN begins operating the Continental Limited, a luxury passenger train that runs between Montreal and Chicago.

1967 - CN merges with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) to form a government-owned company called Canadian National Railways (CNR).

1978 - The Canadian government privatizes CNR, and the company becomes known as the Canadian National Railway Company (CN).

1995 - CN acquires Illinois Central Railroad, expanding its network into the United States.

2000 - CN acquires Wisconsin Central Railroad, further expanding its network in the United States.

2018 - CN celebrates its 100th anniversary as a company.

2020 - CN announces plans to acquire Kansas City Southern, a major railway company in the United States, in a $33.6 billion deal. The acquisition is pending regulatory approval.
