History

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) is a Chinese technology company that specializes in the research and development of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. The company was founded in 2011 and has since become one of the world's leading manufacturers of electric vehicle batteries.

CATL's history begins in 2011 when the company was founded in Ningde, China by entrepreneur Zeng Yuqun. The company initially focused on the production of batteries for portable electronics such as laptops and mobile phones. However, in 2014, CATL began to shift its focus towards electric vehicle batteries, recognizing the potential of the growing electric vehicle market.

In 2015, CATL began to expand its production capacity, building a new factory in Qinghai Province, China. The factory was designed to produce large quantities of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and was one of the largest battery factories in the world at the time.

Over the years, CATL has continued to invest heavily in research and development, with a particular focus on improving the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries. In 2016, the company opened a research and development center in Germany, which allowed it to tap into the country's expertise in the automotive industry.

In 2017, CATL made headlines when it signed a major supply agreement with BMW. Under the agreement, CATL would supply BMW with batteries for its electric vehicles, marking a major milestone for the Chinese company.

In the years that followed, CATL continued to expand its customer base, signing supply agreements with a number of major automakers including Volkswagen, Toyota, and Volvo. The company also expanded its production capacity, opening new factories in China and Europe.

In 2018, CATL went public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, becoming one of the first Chinese companies to specialize in electric vehicle batteries to do so. The company's initial public offering (IPO) was one of the largest in Chinese history, raising over $1.8 billion.

Today, CATL is one of the world's largest manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, with a market share of around 28%. The company is committed to investing in research and development, with the goal of continuing to improve the performance and safety of its batteries.
