Summary

CenterPoint Energy, Inc. is a domestic energy delivery company. The Company’s business segments include Electric Transmission and Distribution, Natural Gas Distribution, Competitive Natural Gas Sales and Services, Interstate Pipelines, Field Services and Other Operations.

The Company serves metered customers primarily in Arkansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. The company also owns a 58.3% interest in a midstream partnership it jointly controls with OGE Energy Corp. with operations in natural gas and liquids-rich producing areas of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.

History

1905: After another quarter-century, an organization of businessmen was granted the first franchise for the distribution of natural gas in Shreveport, La.

1995: NorAm Energy Services began marketing wholesale electric power nationwide.

1999: Two years later, NorAm merged with Houston Industries, Inc., the parent company of HL&P, to become one of the United States’ largest integrated energy companies, which was named Reliant Energy, Inc.

2002: The remaining mostly regulated energy delivery company adopted the name CenterPoint Energy to reflect our role in the centre of the energy value chain and the centre of our customers' lives. With the restructuring of the electric market in Texas, the company spun off its retail electric sales (and some other unregulated energy services) as Reliant Resources.

2003: HL&P was split into Reliant Energy, Texas Genco, and CenterPoint Energy.

2004: Until December, CenterPoint Energy and its predecessors operated in its various markets under these names; they were used separately prior to Reliant Energy, and later in conjunction with the Reliant Energy and CenterPoint Energy names. Later that year,  four private equity firms—the Texas Pacific Group, the Blackstone Group, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Hellman & Friedman—combined forces to purchase Texas Genco from Centerpoint.

2006: Texas Genco was sold to NRG Energy of Princeton, N.J.

2009: The company’s five-year smart meter deployment began, delivering enhanced smart meter functionality to Retail Electric Providers (REPs). The company worked with the Department of Energy for a pilot program in Texas centred on energy consumption.

2010: CenterPoint Energy and Ford Motor Company formed a partnership to promote the adoption of electric vehicles.

2018: On April 23, CenterPoint Energy and Vectren Corporation announced they have entered into a definitive merger agreement.

2021: At 1:25 a.m. on February 15, due to a major cold-weather event affecting the state of Texas, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) declared a statewide power generation shortfall emergency, due to a 34,000 MW shortfall generation causing widespread blackouts.
