Summaryarrow

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) is a global standards body established in 2021 to create open, interoperable technical specifications for verifying the origin and history of digital content. Operating as a project of the Joint Development Foundation, C2PA develops the open standard behind Content Credentials, which allows publishers, creators, software developers and platforms to attach tamper-evident provenance information to images, videos, audio files and documents. The initiative aims to improve transparency across the digital ecosystem by enabling users to understand where content originated, how it was created and whether it has been modified. Its specifications are freely available and are being adopted by technology companies, media organisations, camera manufacturers and AI developers to help build greater trust in digital media.

Historyarrow

C2PA was officially announced on 22 February 2021 through a collaboration between Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and Project Origin, an effort led by Microsoft and the BBC. Recognising the growing challenge of misinformation, manipulated media and AI-generated content, the founding organisations, Adobe, Arm, BBC, Intel, Microsoft and Truepic, combined their previous initiatives into a single industry-wide coalition focused on creating a universal provenance standard. Hosted under the Joint Development Foundation, the coalition began developing an open specification that could be implemented across hardware, software and online platforms. In September 2021, C2PA released its first draft specification for public review, followed by Version 1.0 in January 2022. Since then, the standard has continued to evolve with regular specification updates, expanded support for images, video, audio and documents, and growing participation from companies including Google, Sony and Publicis Groupe. Today, thousands of organizations participate directly or indirectly in the Content Credentials ecosystem, making C2PA one of the leading initiatives for digital media provenance worldwide.

Goals And Purposearrow

C2PA's mission is to establish open technical standards that enable trustworthy digital content provenance at global scale. The coalition develops specifications that allow creators, publishers and technology providers to securely record the origin and edit history of digital assets while preserving privacy, accessibility and interoperability. Beyond creating technical standards, C2PA promotes industry adoption, develops implementation guidance and reference tools, collaborates with standards organisations, and encourages social media platforms, publishers and software vendors to preserve and display Content Credentials across digital ecosystems.

Impactarrow

C2PA has become one of the world's most influential initiatives for digital content transparency during the rise of generative AI. Its Content Credentials standard has been implemented or supported by major organizations including Adobe, Microsoft, Google, Sony, Intel, BBC and numerous camera manufacturers, publishers and AI companies. The specifications provide a common framework for embedding cryptographically verifiable provenance information into digital assets, helping creators disclose AI-assisted workflows while allowing consumers to verify a content's creation history. By promoting interoperability instead of proprietary solutions, C2PA has accelerated collaboration across media, journalism, technology and public policy communities. Its work continues to shape discussions around responsible AI, digital authenticity and trust infrastructure for the internet.
