History

CoinMarketCap was founded by IT programmer Brandon Chez in May 2013, with the mission to provide unbiased, high-quality, and accurate information to make cryptocurrencies discoverable and efficient globally. The platform quickly established itself as the most trusted source for cryptoasset price tracking, becoming indispensable for users, institutions, and major media outlets like CNBC and Bloomberg. By May 2016, CoinMarketCap introduced its first public API, further enhancing accessibility to its comprehensive data.

In May 2018, CoinMarketCap expanded its user base by launching its first iOS app, followed by a professional API in August 2018, catering to advanced users and institutions requiring detailed market data. The platform's popularity soared, culminating in 3.6 billion page views by the end of 2018. In March 2019, CoinMarketCap achieved a significant milestone when its CMC200 and CMC200EX indices were listed on Nasdaq, Bloomberg, and Refinitiv, marking its integration into mainstream financial platforms.

Continuing its expansion, CoinMarketCap launched its first Android app in April 2019 and formed the DATA Alliance in May 2019, promoting data transparency and accountability within the crypto space. The platform acquired Hashtag Capital in June 2019 to further its data capabilities. In November 2019, CoinMarketCap hosted its inaugural conference, "The Capital," and introduced the Liquidity Metric to combat fake trading volumes.

In April 2022, its YouTube channel surpassed 380,000 followers, and in May 2022, it hosted the online conference "The Capital: Time to Ship."
