History

Colgate-Palmolive was founded in 1806 as a small soap and candle business in New York City. Since then, the company has grown significantly, becoming a global leader in the household and personal care industry. In 1873, William Colgate died and his nephew, James Boorman, took control of the company. He changed the name to Colgate & Company and introduced new products, such as baking soda and toilet soap. The company went public in 1906 and continued to expand throughout the 1900s, acquiring many other soap and toothpaste brands. In 1928, Palmolive-Peet merged with Colgate-Palmolive to become one of the largest soap manufacturers in the world. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Colgate-Palmolive developed even more products such as laundry detergents, medical antiseptics, and mouthwash. In the 1950s and 1960s, the company continued to grow and innovated with the introduction of products such as toothpastes and toothbrushes with fluoride. In the 1970s and 1980s, Colgate-Palmolive continued to invest heavily in research and development, becoming a leader in oral care and dental products. Since 2000, Colgate-Palmolive has continued to expand, investing in new technologies and innovations, making them a leader in environmentally friendly products and packaging. The company has also diversified its portfolio, offering pet nutrition, laundry detergent, and fabric softeners.
