Summary

Çorbada Tuzun Olsun Dernegi (ÇOTUN) is a Turkish NGO that works to reduce homelessness in the country. The association started in 2014 by distributing soup to the homeless, meeting their clothing needs, and helping some to reunite with their families and find jobs. The association developed unique models and programs to address homelessness, creating an ecosystem named the Homeless-Friendly Society and City. Through this ecosystem, the homeless can participate in society without marginalization.

The primary goal of Çorbada Tuzun Olsun Derne?i (ÇOTUN) is to reduce homelessness and poverty in Turkey by providing essential services such as food, clothing, and shelter, as well as assisting in rehabilitation, employment, and social integration. They work to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness and engage with volunteers, public institutions, and the private sector to create an ecosystem that supports homeless people to participate in society without marginalization.

The association established a Crisis Centre to evaluate incoming notifications and map homeless to include them in the ecosystem. ÇOTUN enables the identification of the homeless so that they can obtain health insurance, and volunteers help them benefit from health and social services. Since its establishment in 2017, ÇOTUN has distributed free hot soup to approximately 200-250 homeless individuals every night around the Beyoglu district in Istanbul.

ÇOTUN receives funding from a variety of sources, including institutional funds, private donations, and corporate social responsibility programs. In 2021, the organization received a grant from an institutional fund to improve its project development capacity and diversify its income resources.

ÇOTUN's coordination efforts have led to partnerships with public institutions, private companies, civil society groups, and academia. They have also published reports such as "Biological Disaster: The Situation of the Homeless in the COVID-19 Pandemic and Strategic Planning for the Homeless," which evaluates the impact of the pandemic on the homeless population and provides recommendations for addressing the issue.

History

Çorbada Tuzun Olsun Dernegi (ÇOTUN) is a non-governmental organization established in 2017 to raise awareness about homelessness and find permanent solutions to the issue. It started as an initiative in 2014, distributing hot soup and clothing to the homeless every night.

In 2016, the association established a Clothing Store that provided free services for the homeless. Later, it had to close due to a lack of resources. In 2017, ÇOTUN was established to overcome resource shortages, forming a network of volunteers from over 260 university clubs and 150 high school student groups. The association developed unique models and programs to address homelessness, creating an ecosystem named the Homeless-Friendly Society and City. Through this ecosystem, the homeless can participate in society without marginalization.

ÇOTUN received a grant from an Institutional Fund in 2021 to improve its project development capacity and diversify its income resources, while working to reduce homelessness in Turkey. Over 260 university clubs and 150 high school student groups are now ÇOTUN's volunteers, and the association has formed a network of volunteers mainly from university communities. It also established coordination among the public, private, and civil sectors, academia, all the institutions of the Ministry of Family and Social Services, and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in two types of poverty: deepening and over-the-extreme poverty and widespread poverty in which new poor emerge. A segment of the middle class has become impoverished and homeless. ÇOTUN published the Biological Disaster: The Situation of the Homeless in the COVID-19 Pandemic and Strategic Planning for the Homeless report, which evaluated COVID-19 as a biological disaster based on disaster literature. The report suggests that the pandemic has affected the health and socio-economic situation of the homeless and recommends a strategic approach to alleviate homelessness in the country.

The association's primary activities now involve supporting the homeless with safe and healthy food through mobile food banking, establishing a crisis center to evaluate incoming notifications, and developing strategies to reduce homelessness risk with short, medium, and long-term scenarios.

Goals and Purpose

Çorbada Tuzun Olsun Dernegi (ÇOTUN) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Istanbul, Turkey, that is dedicated to raising awareness about homelessness and finding permanent solutions to homelessness issues. The organization's primary goal is to reduce homelessness in Turkey by providing support and aid to homeless individuals, particularly through food distribution and basic needs assistance.

ÇOTUN was initially founded as an initiative in 2014 with the aim of distributing soup to the homeless in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul. Since then, the organization has expanded its efforts and established a network of over 260 university clubs and 150 high school student groups to support its activities. With the help of volunteers, public institutions, the private sector, and other civil groups, ÇOTUN has developed unique models and programs for addressing homelessness.

Through its Homeless Friendly Society and City ecosystem, ÇOTUN helps homeless individuals participate in society without marginalization. The organization provides mobile food banking, humanitarian aid for basic needs, and a Crisis Center to evaluate incoming notifications and map individuals in need. By identifying homeless individuals, ÇOTUN assists them in obtaining health insurance and accessing social services and works towards integrating them back into society through rehabilitation, housing, and employment opportunities.

Impact

The organization's main activity is the distribution of free hot soup to around 200-250 homeless individuals every night in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul. In addition to providing food, ÇOTUN also offers clothing and support to help the homeless find jobs and reconnect with their families.

In 2021, ÇOTUN received a grant from an Institutional Fund to improve its project development capacity and diversify its income resources. The organization has a unique approach to addressing homelessness, which involves creating an ecosystem called the Homeless Friendly Society and City. This ecosystem is designed to integrate the homeless into society without marginalization by providing them with access to health and social services, rehabilitation, housing, and employment opportunities.

ÇOTUN's volunteer network includes over 260 university clubs and 150 high school student groups, as well as individuals from public institutions, the private sector, other civil groups, and academia. The organization also coordinates with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Ministry of Family and Social Services to ensure a collaborative approach to reducing homelessness and extreme poverty.
