History
Crown Castle International Corporation (CCI) is an American corporation that specializes in communications infrastructure. It has primary operations in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, providing services in the wireless infrastructure, fiber networks, and data center sectors. The company was founded in 1994 as Crown Communications, a wireless infrastructure provider. It acquired American Tower Corp in 1998, rebranding itself as Crown Castle in 1999. In 2004, Crown Castle acquired Global Signal, Inc, becoming the largest independent owner of communications infrastructure in the US, and has since continued to grow through acquisitions. In 2006, Crown Castle acquired Nextel Communications' tower portfolio for $4.8 billion and subsequently acquired WAY Automation Solutions and Paul Revere Companies. In 2020, Crown Castle made an agreement with USG to acquire its fiber network assets, as well as a joint venture with Evercore. The same year, the company acquired a 42% stake in FiberLight, LLC, a leading fiber network operator in the US. Crown Castle has continued to grow since then, expanding their portfolio of fiber and wireless assets domestically, as well as globally. As of 2021, the company has operations in the US, Australia, and the UK, and owns, operates, and leases approximately 40,000 towers, 70,000 route miles of fiber, and 1,300 distributed antenna systems.
