History

Crusoe Energy was founded in 2018 by Chase Lochmiller and Cully Cavness in San Francisco, California. The company was created with the goal of solving a critical issue faced by AI companies—providing the necessary infrastructure for AI workloads while addressing the environmental impact of energy use.

At the time of its founding, AI companies were increasingly constrained by the high energy demands of their operations, particularly in running AI models. Crusoe Energy aimed to develop an AI infrastructure solution powered by renewable energy sources, which could support the growing demand for computing power without contributing to environmental harm.

In its early years, Crusoe focused on building infrastructure that could convert stranded energy, such as gas flares from oil drilling sites, into usable power for data centres. This approach allowed Crusoe to tap into previously unused energy sources, reducing emissions and making use of excess power. Initially, the company’s focus was on cryptocurrency mining, but as the AI industry grew, Crusoe saw an opportunity to expand its services into AI cloud infrastructure.

In 2021, Crusoe secured significant investment and began developing its first large-scale data centres, using its energy-first approach to build facilities that could handle the power demands of AI models. The company also expanded internationally, with projects in Iceland and North Dakota, where it could access clean, renewable energy. These data centres were specifically designed to support AI workloads, and Crusoe became known for its innovative approach to managing energy use in AI infrastructure.

By 2023, Crusoe Energy had raised more capital and expanded its operations significantly. The company began construction on one of the largest AI data centres in the world in Abilene, Texas, as part of Project Stargate, a $500 billion initiative backed by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. This project aimed to develop AI infrastructure at an unprecedented scale, and Crusoe was selected as the lead developer for the first site of the initiative.

In 2025, the company continued to grow, securing partnerships and expanding its data centre capacity, including a deal to build a 200 MW AI data centre with plans to expand to 1.2 GW.

Crusoe Energy’s growth has been driven by its ability to scale AI infrastructure quickly while keeping energy costs low and reducing emissions. The company’s cloud services are now recognised for their reliability and performance, offering solutions that are up to 20 times faster and 81% less expensive than traditional cloud providers.

Today, Crusoe Energy is considered a leader in AI infrastructure, with a focus on providing scalable, energy-efficient solutions to companies working on advanced AI applications. The company remains committed to its mission of aligning the future of computing with the future of the climate, and it continues to expand its reach across the globe.

Mission

Crusoe Energy's mission is to accelerate the abundance of energy and intelligence by building AI infrastructure powered by clean, renewable energy. The company aims to support the growth of AI technologies while addressing the environmental impact of energy consumption. By converting stranded energy into usable power for data centres, Crusoe provides a sustainable solution for AI workloads. Its purpose-built data centres help businesses scale their AI applications efficiently, ensuring that the future of computing aligns with the future of the climate.
