Founded with the aim of advancing healthcare education and research, DMIMS began its journey in 1989 with the establishment of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) in Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha.

This elevated its stature and allowed DMIMS to further enhance its academic programmes and research initiatives. The university status facilitated the introduction of integrated postgraduate courses and PG diploma programmes in diverse fields, including Management and Humanities, catering to a broader spectrum of educational aspirations.

Located in Sawangi-Meghe, Wardha, DMIMS benefits from a serene rural environment spread over 125 acres, offering students and faculty alike a conducive setting for learning and research. Despite its rural setting, the university is well-connected to urban centres like Nagpur through efficient road, rail, and air transport networks, enhancing accessibility for students and patients seeking healthcare services at its affiliated hospitals.

Over the years, DMIMS has not only excelled in academic pursuits but has also made significant contributions to medical research and healthcare delivery.
